@Xeniax@mastodon.ml this seems like what people in China have been doing for decades. The Machine does not quit.

@sashag@anarres.family Not long ago there was a political constituency in primary education circles that idolized the concept. Their pet word was "grit." It was disgusting.

@markrprior@ohai.social this is a long-established method of practicing solidarity. Love it.

@parismarx but they don't need AI for that. It's just something to hide behind, to pretend that denying care isn't simply their profitability model.

@mmcknett@hachyderm.io @Xeniax@mastodon.ml I didn't know about that but I think they've learned to be pretty clever. And there's an entire culture surrounding the ability to communicate in code. It seems that's the way we are headed in the United States.

@cliffle I think the core issue is a deep emotional revulsion (fear) of the idea that human brains are essentially neural networks.
There is a real monster under the bed, we know what it is, and we have no assurance that we can tame it.

@0xabad1dea funny coincidence - the image classifier I tried on my local machine a few years ago did the same for a groundhog. This is why some people are bearish on AI.
The "G" word.
Perhaps Israelis should take the word back and call each other geniciders... "Yo, Benny, my genicidah! Waddup?"

@9x0rg@mamot.fr is it a win when Ubuntu shoves the snap ecosystem down my throat? Is it beating Windows or becoming Windows?

@Nead@social.vivaldi.net @Tutanota@mastodon.social yet everyone tells me that LLMs are merely word predictors. Entropy? Hmmm
Replying to
@tarmil@mastodon.tarmil.fr @gabrielesvelto@mas.to perhaps. Does the existence of AI incentivize more entities to deploy spidering than in the past? I suppose the premise is that grabbing content is a more compelling prospect if one can employ processing with greater ROI than simply indexing and/or mirroring.
It makes some sense but is hardly assured.

@nixCraft@mastodon.social I recall using IBM 2311s. I think they each had a capacity of 5 MB but they were stacks of platters. The 2314s doubled (?) that. And the 3330 packs, IIRC, had 100MB capacity in the late '70s.

@domo@pizza.enby.city @cdarwin@c.im Are you suggesting the land should be a colony of the UK?
Are you conflating the Nakba with the notion of a sovereign state on some land in question?
We can agree that the largely (not purely) genocidal society there is generally abhorrent - while acknowledging that a better way forward is considerably more complicated than condemning one of the better US pols.

@grumpyoldtechie@hostux.social @gabrielesvelto@mas.to I had the impression that a robots.txt file is hit or miss with regard to compliance regardless of the purpose for scraping. Beyond that, the rapaciousness of scraping is at least somewhat subjective, existing on a spectrum that is in part dependent on the application and purpose.
The qualitative difference of AI is that derivative products exemplify a novel formulation with regard to what might have been deemed fair use in the past.

@domo@pizza.enby.city @cdarwin@c.im Sanders was a young child in 1948. Yeah, his voting record on Israel is not stellar. None of us are omniscient. He's not running for pres. He's acknowledged that he is too old anyway. Would you prefer that he disappear? You want fiery rhetoric from him calling for dissolution of Israel?

@cmyrland@tutoteket.no @9x0rg@mamot.fr I have actually removed snap from my Ubuntu boxes in the past. But this misses the point. The use of computers is not shoved down my throat either.
I'm free to compile the kernel too. I usually don't, do you? The subject at hand was the dominance of Linux. When a dominant distribution starts incorporating a default repository that is proprietary and exclusive while coercing its use, this significantly changes the landscape. I'll characterize it as throat-shoving. You do you.

@claudius@darmstadt.social @gabrielesvelto@mas.to not splitting hairs. Nor am I denying that AI exacerbates the problem - as it similarly increases demand for cycles/energy in many dimensions. Merely considering the issue in broader terms. Why must this be a debate?
