It’s not what you say, it’s how you say it and how it’s perceived. That’s why we have the politics we have today. Ain’t it great to be picky about how something is said?

You mean they couldn't just stop paying their workers? I thought AI was supposed to replace all that FTE overhead that gets in the way of shareholder profits!!!!!111111oneoneoneoenone Business morons who don't understand tech is what this bubble is all about. I can't believe so many businesses have sunk hundreds of billions of dollars into technology that fundamentally cannot do what they fantasize it to do.

This discussion got away from the education use case multiple comments ago. I'm not advocating for more parking. Originally my point was to impress that you cannot just simply rip out parking today for absolutely everyone. Dorm learning and existing public transit options do not work for people with real needs, today who shouldn't be alienated just because they do not fit into the dorm model. They are an extreme minority of students, so a very limited amount of parking is necessary for them. They often attend night classes as well, when parking lots are typically empty on college campuses. I wouldn't be surprised if they fit into staff parking spaces in the majority of scenarios since most staff won't be there for night classes. Freight rail was overwhelmingly built before cars became prevalent on the household level, and then in the past 40 years or so cars went from a household level to individual ownership en masse for the majority of people of driving age who do not live in areas with extensive public transit. Other buildouts have been way too modest. Most of the stuff that seems big is just revamping existing lines. The closest thing to a major rail project I know of coming out right now is Brightline West, a passenger line from LA to Vegas.

The car argument is relevant because OK, you take a train from NYC to Seattle or some shit. It goes across thousands of miles. If you were to stop at a station to visit a relative along the way, you could get off the train and still be 3-5+ hours by car travel to that relative who lives in podunkville population 100. We have an enormous amount of land that has very, very low population density. There are huge swathes that also practically have no to minimal population living there permanently. Then we have places like Alaska that have absolutely insane supply chain (and thus costs for basic sundries) that really are only servicable by boat, plane or car unless you're building a stretch of rail through canada. Much of the nation doesn't want to fund infrastructure for "city folk" and that's just around half of the people who vote on a nationwide scale. Even with some of the super liberal areas with tons of uber left leaning wealthy people, the left leaning wealthy people still push back on policies that require changing zoning from single family (wealthy) houses to high density housing despite being on commuter rail lines. Same towns complain that education costs are way too high and that they don't want to pay taxes for them because they just send their kids to private school anyway. Wealthy NIMBYs rule policy for public transit, and the republican party also basically follows the philosophy of "fuck you, i've got mine" so although the technical solution is mass implementation of public transit, the problem is wealthy assholes controlling the media and politics, stopping any kind of major project from ever getting off the ground.

Robust public transit is for sure the solution in highly dense population areas. Unfortunately it is rarely implemented in the US. A lot of foreigners have trouble grasping just how big the US is, and just how far you have to travel to get anywhere. A few hours gets you from one side of a country to another in many european and latin american nations. In the US it takes many days to drive from one side to another. Some states take many hours to cross. Robust public transit isn't feasible in the majority of the US, and there is immense negative reactions to imminent domain.

People are too selfish in this country to consider that public services like transit end up making everything more comfortable, cheaper and better for everyone. Expecting everyone to use a car from point A to point B means everyone has to pay to insure and maintain their car, then sit in traffic 1-2+ hours a day for their commute to where the jobs are that pay more than minimum wage and cause gridlock for everybody. Plus we all burn extra gas to make sure we accelerate the climate damage even further. It's the motherfucking _american_ way. oorah support our troops, bless your heart, thoughts and prayers! So moronic.

A lot of campus locations lack good public transit or local retail access for necessities. When you don’t support any kind of parking you also make it difficult for people who have full time jobs or are continuing education as adults. Single parents also go to school, I know, I was in college as a child(obviously not enrolled.)

Keep on moving those goalposts. Now you're claiming I think the US is innocent or a good country. lol They don't do a fraction of what they should do. There's way too many ignorant fucks in this country letting countless wealthy assholes do whatever they want. It's disgusting. I think the poorest in the US, the ones working shitty retail jobs, have it much better than they possibly realize. Don't get me started on the vast excesses of wealth afforded to the middle class or anybody making more than median. Odds are you have some serious privilege too, just because you're on here with the rest of us.

I don't see people pushing much beyond 40 hours in professional environments. I work in IT and have been exposed to many industries through consulting and long term contracts. Admittedly i'm close to an urban center with fairly high cost of living but that's where the good jobs are usually. Rural areas / closer to FPL and you start having struggles, but there's still SNAP and Medicaid. I also know someone who has a full time office job making ~130k TC and they also have an almost full time side gig of being a waitress who also does the schedule and hiring (so waitress manager) and she schedules herself for the busy nights, but especially friday/saturday and sports nights. Her top tipping nights can be 1k+, but this is in fairly hcol area. She put three of her kids through college doing this because she can hustle. She sure didn't start out with this though, like most of us didn't. There's shitty jobs all over, but if we're talking anything near median wage (66k in the US) the problems you are talking about largely go away. It's not hard to find a job to coast at though if that's your goal... but if you're working retail or are wait staff and making nothing on your shifts, you should find a better place to work at. Criminal records are usually the only real thing preventing this, otherwise it's usually a preference or choice. There's opportunity if you pursue it, but not if you disqualify yourself or limit yourself for personal reasons.

Filtering the air should be a net positive. Most of the colds I get are september to may, aligning with kids going to school and parents bringing in their illnesses to work and social meetups (in US this is thanksgiving, christmas - i'm sure these things depend on the place.)

You're a tool and you're holding up a strawman argument, and you've even changed your own story now.

You started out with:

This comment is so frustrating 😅

Which I am sure it is for you. It doesn't really say anything negative or concrete about china, AT ALL. It makes no claims about china. And you even acknowledge it... but try to stir up some shit without actually finding anything to stir up. It's like you're just a propagandist trying to say america bad, which they are for a myriad of reasons, but it's not because people can't be admitted to hospitals or they are dying from overwork - which is what I replied to originally.

😅 one of the only concrete statements you make about Chinese policy is “i cant imagine them handing out free food to anybody”. Literally political criticism based on vibes.

I didn't make a "concrete statement" about anything. And you conveniently omitted the first part of the sentence that literally said "I don't know the food situation in china" didn't you? Because you're holding up the imaginary argument of "china doesn't have even a single food bank" as your strawman argument, and you had no clue either way, because you had to google it, idiot.

China's median wage is close to 6k/year. Chile and Uruguay is close to 12k/year. The dominican republic is ~7400/year, and they absolutely do not have any kind of real food assistance program outside of the smallest scope. Chile does have something a lot more substantial, but they make wayyyy more. Given that china is poorer in terms of median wage than any of these, that's going to be the case for a lot of workers away from wealthy median areas.

The fact that China is even on the Global Hunger Index site shows that hunger is still a challenge. They are near the top of the chart with many of the latin american countries i've listed. Globally hunger has been much less of a problem in the past 10 years than ever before, only in truly troubled countries do you find horrific levels, like in Haiti or Somalia - and nobody is saying china is anything like those in the overwhelming majority of the country. Not having food banks is way less than mass food insecurity... it's the missing gap between healthy income levels and

China does have a dibao system for an extremely area by area "basic income" where they give people a pittance per month that can partially subsidize what they have, but there's no real federal style food assistance beyond that. China spends more money on food than any other category in rural areas by a huge margin, and you don't need to take my word for it. You can check the PRC's own statistics instead of "googling it" like an ignorant moron.

  • Overall Median income is ~41k yuan or ~5,900. About 1.4 billion people in total.

  • Urban Median income is ~54k yuan or ~$7,800. This is about 952 million people.

  • Rural Median Income is only ~23k yuan or ~$3,300 or so. This is about 452 million people.

That rural amount is despairingly low and since it's median half of the people in rural areas make less...this is unbelievably below poverty level in so many countries around the world. Food insecurity must be a major challenge in rural areas since with that kind of income food costs become paramount to all others.

The statistics I linked from the CCCP also call out rural spending on "food, tobacco and liquor" because clearly food is in the same category as getting lung cancer sticks and fucking your body up with booze (priorities right) and that comes out to 6226 yuan, or just shy of $900 a year. When ~32% of your income is going to just food, smokes and booze, losing a job puts you in dire straits. In poorer rural areas the "basic income" from dibao is only 200($28) to 300($43) yuan a month, and you still need to have clothes, a place to live, etc. 3600 yuan ($519/year) - I think everyone knows this isn't going to be nearly enough.

There's no way food banks originating from extremely wealthy urban areas ten years ago are suddenly reaching the majority of Chinese. It's not even a state sponsored thing (yay communism, helping the people!) I still have substantial doubt as to how much food assistance there is even in many urban areas, because I know how tough food tends to be when money is tight in countries that are generally poor (but not troubled like Haiti.) Food assistance programs can only subsidize a small portion, as we see with SNAP in the US. Wait.. snap is the american government food assistance program? Who are the communists again?

"Wealthy" white american here, child of a single parent. Third generation in the US. I went to work with said parent or family and was offloaded to childcare at YMCA or relatives or often just hanging out at the pizza place where said parent worked. I made a lot of pizza boxes over the years. I also got a lot of free pizza. I rode the bus to school because it was cheap throughout childhood until basically high school when I could walk from my house. There were periods I walked to and from school though, even as young as 7 years old. I was most often one of the poorest families in an incredibly wealthy town. A town I can't possibly afford to buy a home in today despite having a great job. I didn't have hot water in one of the houses I grew up in for over a decade. Never had to boil water though thankfully but one of the neighboring towns had a catastrophe ruining their water supply. Before I was born, my family lived in that town. We had an AC by the time I was a teenager but was instructed to never put it below ~78f with low fan speed or so. I'm totally fine today without AC and just fans... but once I got a good career I swapped to whatever AC temp I wanted, it's the luxury I always wanted. Modern QOL in the US is absolutely insane compared to 40 years ago, even with current difficult economy challenges. When I travel I see conditions way worse than what we had then for most humans, but i'm not traveling to wealthy nations typically. I also don't bother with shitty expensive resorts. Give me Lima any day (oh my god the food, best in the world imo.)

_Regarding AC_ >Well, not unheard of, but the way you over there use it is. Slight correction - yes. Turning it full on to have temperature 10 Celsius degrees lower than on the outside - no. I said half of the world, which is completely accurate. It is completely unheard of for a huge swath of humanity. The energy costs are INSANE to run a heat pump in 2026 prices outside of the wealthy elite globally. Let's arbitrarily say top 10% or so of earners, which is something between 35k and 47k... hardly a princely sum in the US, given that the US median is something like 62k. There are places in latin america that have air conditioning, obviously. It's exceptionally uncommon based on my firsthand experience though outside of tourist areas like hotels and high end restaurants. There are wealthy areas in nearly every country on earth that are exceptions to the rule.

Nowhere near the same. Labor protection laws are basically shit and have largely been eroding since FDR almost a hundred years ago, but we don't have the 996 mentality here by a long shot. Food pantries are everywhere. It's not like latin america where starvation is much of an issue almost everywhere if you don't have a job. No idea how the food situation is in China, but I can't imagine them handing out free food to anybody. ERs accept everyone, but all they can do is basic treatment of acute conditions. In civilized states like Massachusetts they have state sponsored health insurance like MassHealth which covers costs which is partially paid for by medicaid for the poorest people of any age. Medical debt is incredibly hard to collect on too. Pretty much is the last kind of debt you should ever consider paying if your choice is between paying your mortgage, paying the tax man, or paying medical. Education debt is far worse and impossible to escape short of death though. The healthcare situation is fucked in the US, but it's mostly due to insurance companies, lack of regulation for pharma and medical devices, and wages overall. In terms of jobs, it's very rare in the US to see companies who want to see workers there over 40 hours a week in the shittiest of jobs which are typically paid hourly and eligible for overtime. In the blue collar world you make bank and they incentivize extra overtime with extra pay on top of overtime rate in the busy seasons depending on trade. In the white collar world it is rare to see anyone working much over 45 hours outside of a handful of toxic roles and upper leadership positions / highly compensated roles like management consulting. Americans just don't understand how good they have it, despite all the awful flaws thanks to billionaires owning politics. Yeah, it can definitely be better and we should ask for better... but when you start looking at the rest of the world, the overwhelming majority can't comprehend our quality of life. Air conditioning? practically unheard of for more than half the world mostly living much closer to the equator where heat is literally killing people.

You're not kidding, that's for sure. My wife watched a video about ICE surveillance last night and she couldn't believe they are building databases or protestors or holding airport photos of immigrants for 75 years. Normies do not understand just how bad it is, they think pointing out all this stuff is crazy conspiracy theory. 100% of the data is out there for every single action we do now. Everything we say (smartphones, 'smart' devices), Where we are driving, when we are driving, when we are out and about, who we are with, who we exchange messages with, how much money we make, what we spend it on, everything we comment on the internet, all of our browser history, every message we exchange on nearly all platforms... everything is for sale. 1984 is technically feasible, today. We're so close it's terrifying.

They will regress to what they were before. Pushing horridly overpriced workstation cards and price gouging gamers and pumping out substandard garbage cards for prebuilt “gaming” pcs assembled by others with a shitload of flashy lights and no substance. You can bet they will continue to develop proprietary standards akin to Sony to try and accomplish another big win that makes them quadrillionaires.

Why PS5? why not any of the other good controllers out there. https://gamepadla.com/ We all know the "trackpad" on the ps5 controller is not really the same at all. Potentiometers for joysticks are unheard of in high quality controllers these days- everybody is using Hall Effect or TMR. It's not like games really make use of touch controls these days, at least not the ones releasing on PC with high popularity like Crimson Desert. PS5 controller specific, there is no dongle. You're stuck wired or bluetooth. Bluetooth is generally the worst for latency on any controller, and aside from a couple of very specific models with very low bluetooth latency it's really bad compared to a dedicated dongle / 2.4G.

Yeah, the typical experience for people doesn't expose them to what's out there for controllers. Maybe you've heard of 8bitdo in passing or have seen the really shitty hori conrollers in your childhood (or any of the other archaic garbage brands that used to exist and were handed to little brothers everywhere as the shitty controller.) Times have changed. I think the non-major brands are better now. I have only tried a small sample of what is out there, but have yet to be disappointed in the $25-$65 range. Can't speak to the stupid expensive $100-200+ controllers like what razer makes. I usually check reviewers. Bluetooth as a tech has all kinds of issues for users. Just takes a bad driver update and it's not working right. Dongles just work, like cables. Plus some controllers are horrible on bluetooth. Latency most people don't notice without a side by side comparison, but it's always there. I do use controllers with bluetooth, generally when I have no other option or a dongle isn't convenient. It's common for dongles to be included with and removable from charging base stations nowadays, like what comes with the ~$55 8bitdo ultimate wireless 2. The trackpad filter though you're looking for doesn't exist because nothing else works like the valve deck/controller pads. The ps5 one is not really the same without the feedback and awkward placement imo. I haven't had stick drift myself either since the 360 days, but I don't game full time on a controller. It's one of those every now and then on a specific game i'll use it. Have a ps5 but hardly played it so the controller is still like new.... but I had an xbox elite series 2 controller have shoulder button issues with less than 100 hours used, which led me to look at "off brands" that changed my mind about how to approach controllers overall. Will say that joystick tension adjustments are awesome, as are adjustable triggers. Most other features are pointless for me but I know macros can be useful for some. The trackpad thing is a hard sell though because the game has to have a meaningful implementation (still waiting to find one of those. Maybe someone with a deck that uses them heavily can chime in..) or you need to setup a custom controls in steam's direct input somehow to make use of it in a game.

I think a good non-tech comparison is moderna. They made a shitload of cash from covid vaccines being state subsidized and then once the initial backlog of orders cleared they reduced to next to no cash flow. They're still better off than they were before (and nvidia will be too, there will always be some demand... but not years of backorders.) Moderna is still downsizing heavily though and can only have more layoffs unless something changes. I'd say they will end up around 2-4x their original revenue, in ~5 years.

I'm completely familiar with community layouts as a steam deck user. The point for those to me is creating controls when a developer does not have them themselves. I have been using specialty peripherals for multiple decades, starting from when they used serial and peripheral ports. I'm quite aware of being able to bind buttons from flight sticks, yokes and other devices in games in many different ways. I still can't find a good use case in any game i've played for those touchpads though, especially not if I have an R4/L4 and back paddles (because cardinal direction keybinds are an easy 'oh it's x extra buttons!') Would be awesome if someone could chime in with actual examples of how they are so awesome in a game like crimson desert, pragmata, stardew valley, dynasty warriors origins, nioh 3, monster hunter wilds, or even games that aren't really controller games like cyber knights: fliashpoint or factorio or something. I know some people use the trackpads for games that really ought to use a mouse and keyboard like non-controller FPS games, and RTS games... but I still don't see a real reason why I would want to try and suffer through trackpads intead of a real mouse or even a trackball mouse on a couch htpc scenario.

I don't want to fuck with controller settings to create unique bindings and controls for a feature that has no meaningful value add. If I wanted four extra buttons or something, i'd just use the extra shoulder buttons and paddle buttons on the back of my controllers. There's no reason to do this though in crimson desert that I know of, the stock controller binds are awesome.

Some safety equipment encourages accidents. For bicycles though, can't really say anything negative about helmets. They save brains. American Football though? I bet the concussion problem would go away overnight if they took them away. You don't bash your head against someone unless you think you're invulnerable thanks to a helmet anyway.

So fun. Segregation and rampant racism everywhere.

Once I upgraded to a 4k tv I started pulling 4K HDR versions. It can be hard to know how good the quality will be between 5GB, 10GB, 25GB and 50GB movies, because there are many substandard releases out there. Especially true with older content. Newer stuff can make a difference, but let’s be realistic. It costs nothing to just download a few versions and see. :)

Sucks. Still my favorite streaming service because of all the high quality science fiction shows and no ad tier. So far they haven’t cancelled any of the shows I’ve been super excited for either. It’s not like scamazon or netsux where they do a season and it’s awesome but oh, no! It isn’t #1 for a month on launch!… better cancel it. It’s still just a billionaire owned company though and likely to do what everyone else does eventually. Can’t wait for the next thing to come along and nuke ads again.
