I'm Emma (she/they), and I am mad keen on the idea of growing plants in space, so that's mostly what I talk about - #plants and #space. I also like mission patches, space food and #gardening on Earth. I'm the producer & host of a podcast called Gardeners of the Galaxy.

I am a human and happy to chat, so if you’ve got a question about plants in space, please do ask!

The answer isn't low gravity or the weak magnetic field – it's the soil.

From Waste to Resource: Making Materials in Space

Every kilogram launched into space comes at significant cost, and the further from home a crew travels, the less practical it becomes to rely on resupply missions from Earth. Finding ways to make the best use of the resources already on board will be essential to making deep space exploration viable.

"The Soviets presented science as a utopian ideal. Thousands of researchers worked in imperfect secrecy on ‘big science’ initiatives, mostly for cold war military objectives. In the 1990s, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, many institutions were left destitute and their advanced technology was doomed to extinction. But some scientists persevered, adapting to the landscape."
