I really love when I ask the AI to do something, and it gives me 40-50 lines to do it, and I tell it there’s no way something like that should take that much code, and it’s like oh, ya you’re right, here’s a 5 line version. I’ve tried to put in its memory to not do things like that, but it keeps doing it.

So if I understand this right… people who left because they were mad, won’t have an old reddit to ever come back to if they ever decide to go back and haven’t logged in for awhile?

As a mobile dev, I remember seeing jobs early on that would have years of experience required that predated android/ios.

Hey William, I’m having trouble understanding this code, it looks a little weird, can you walk me through it in detail, and explain how you came to writing it like this?

Its’s not that hard to get to that many lines once you consider imports might be the first 50 of a file. At least in mobile dev. Then with something like declarative UI frameworks, you might end up with something like 8 lines to show 1 thing of stylized text so it’s all formatted cleanly.

It often can do it better if you prod it though. Its just so weird that its really hard to get it to do that. It knows how even if it is trained on poor over complicated stuff.

Wouldn't renting be the ultimate way to know if it was profitable as there's no hidden costs? No insurance, no depreciation, no maintenance, no repairs. You do a shift and whatever you make you make.

Insurance comes with the rentals or your credit card in most cases. And duh. Thats my point. You pay, and that's it. No more hidden costs. Any given day is profitable or not, and you immediately know. edit: we even have a car share service here that includes gas in the rental.

>It's the people that try to use LLMs for things outside their domain of expertise that really cause the problems. That seems to general. Im a mobile developer and sometimes I need a simple script outside my knowledge area. I needed to scrape a website recently, not for anything serious, but to save me time. Claude wrote it and it works. Its probably trash code, but it works and it helped. But you wouldn't want me using Claude to do important work outside my specific area of focus either or im sure Id cause problems.

Im impressed the battery lasted that long. I know they get touted with 4-6h batteries or maybe even more, but running would take way more energy than walking or picking things up and placing them in a box or whatever. I wonder how much they had left.

Ya, I have no idea how they are pulling it off and making more than minimum wage... but the whole thing is possible in theory, and you'd know what you are spending each day with no hidden costs. If they aren't doing this as their main job, maybe you can sneak a few days in here and there where they offer highly discounted promotions? Or do it on days where volume is expected to be high? edit: maybe they aren't even making minimum wage, but they like the idea they can make $40 on a random night without having to be responsible to anyone but themselves?

The whole not easy to change part can be a little misleading too. They originally thought that was the case with covid vaccines and it turned out that was not the case. Turns out when there's pressure, sometimes things actually can happen.

If you're allowed to rent the car for gig work, they'll almost assuredly offer the insurance for it, and not all gig work is ride share.

Depreciation, maintenance, those are lumped into the cost of the rental.

And the duh was about that, I handled the insurance comment separately.

edit: e.g

https://www.hertz.com/rentacar/misc/index.jsp?targetPage=delivery_rentals.jsp

They offer the rental and insurance. They don't let you carry another person though, so not all gig work, at least on this specific plan.

It’s absolutely causing problems, especially for me, who is one of the only lines of defense keeping stuff even remotely maintainable.

The next step is, CEO, look at how good these non-mobile devs are, they're submitting 10x the commits to the mobile repo than boraginoru our mobile dev! We should fire him and just let the backend devs keep vibe coding it!

Multiple Pascal classes for EE thats interesting. You’re not much older than I am and when we did Pascal my teacher said something like its not really used as much now but its a great learning language, but the 2nd class just moved onto C. I had a friend doing EE and they had Perl as their programming class a few years later. If I had to guess id say its Python now? I also leaned every language i used outside of school on my own.

I think the real problem is that sometimes things like this come around that are disruptive to the workforce, faster than the workforce can handle the influx of new unemployment. It will in theory sort itself out, but at the moment, were in a transition period. That doesn’t mean its bad, but it can mean that our governments aren’t responding in ways that support the worker in the transition which is their fault, not the technologies fault.

I’ll chime in again on the end here, as I think this is where you might be wrong. There is no “oh god it’s moving on it’s own” moment, at least as far as I know. There have been lots of reports of AI’s doing unexpected things and hacking other companies. To be fair, these AI’s from my understanding had been given instructions to try and do hacking things, but none of them were explicitly told to go and hack such and such company. I imagine, to some extent, we’re going to be the ones that help write or train these self replicating capabilities as part of research, and once the AI is capable of doing it, it very well might just do it, the same way it ended up exploiting these other websites even though it wasn’t explicitly instructed to. There are also always on running LLMs AI’s nowadays, and who the fuck knows what it might loop itself into doing from some initial instruction, maybe even from a hallucination altering its directive in a feedback loop.

My old turbo jet engine loud intel MacBook that made noise at the smallest amount of work imaginable vs the silent more powerful m series laptop that lasted what felt like forever battery wise in comparison was such a nice upgrade. With everything I do now though my M1 and its 16gb of ram is becoming a little limiting so im going to have to do something about that eventually. Edit: and its less obvious to others, but them making their own modems now is also a pretty big thing.

Do you not think a line will eventually need to be drawn somewhere though? You might not trust what these companies are saying, but what if you take it at face value that what they said is true. And things like that keep happening in more complex and unexpected ways as the LLMs are allowed to run continuously and autonomously while connected to a fully functioning and ever improving harness?

Many of these IoT devices have incredibly poor security and if they’re connected to the internet can be hacked. The bigger models are very good at finding exploits and using them as well, so it could search for devices and break into vulnerable ones then send something to self replicate and start process.
