The coroner says signs warning of the dangers of crossing the Taieri Mouth need to be more high-profile, following the death of a two-year-old girl who was trapped under her family's boat when it capsized.

Silvia Pinca: Rewilding pine forest into native bush

Silvia Pinca is a biologist and ecologist living on 180 hectares of native bush in Northland. She is in the process of removing invasive species and replanting native trees on her former sheep and pine farms. She's had great success so far, because Kiwi and other native birds are already making themselves at home. Silvia's website says her project has "the goal of restoring and protecting a native forest, offsetting carbon emissions, educating to sustainable living in the bush, researching on pl

@dhobern We have a local example of that here. A consultant to a mining company calculated 50 million Archey's frogs when only 5000 were known previously. Thankfully checks and balances exist to ensure single sources of information don't normally hold too much weight when it comes to decision making. https://i.stuff.co.nz/waikato-times/news/129275083/50-million-or-5000-rare-frog-count-latest-front-in-coromandel-mining-war#:~:text=Rare%20frog%20count%20latest%20front%20in%20Coromandel%20mining%20war,-Sharnae%20Hope05&text=There%20were%20thought%20to%20be,are%20more%20than%2050%20million

I would love to know the genesis of these projects but I suspect they never involved a qualified restoration ecologist.

@joncounts @dhobern I think it's less likely that someone would do it to achieve a financial benefit, I think someone would do it just because they could. Like all the fraudulent voting with the Bird of the Year competition. No one benefits from that, its just messing with something for the sake of it.

@dhobern That's an interesting thought. A few months ago I tweeted about how iNaturalist observations were being used by ecologists in lots of development consent applications now, which led to this story (they asked to interview me but I declined). I'm not sure though how fake data would be helpful for bad actors in these examples though. https://www.rnz.co.nz/national/programmes/afternoons/audio/2018857793/using-inaturalist-community-to-keep-an-eye-on-urban-sprawl

Andrea Vance's weird obsession with Tory Whanau and the Wellington Greens continues.

"Perhaps the best opportunity comes with the proposed sale of the council’s assets - particularly a 34% holding in the city’s airport. In 2022 the Wellington Greens ran on a platform that included no assets sales, and specifically the airport. It has no mandate for a sell-off."

"The strongest arguments available to Labour are that the public hasn’t asked for the sale."
