Official photograph from the award ceremony at Rideau Hall in Ottawa, where, along with distinguished Canadians, I was presented with the Meritorious Service Medal by the Governor General of Canada, the Honourable Louise Arbour. I feel deeply honoured and profoundly grateful for this recognition. Thank you, dear Canadians, for your love and support, expressed in so many ways, including forms I may never fully perceive ❤️🙏🏽 Photos by: MS Anne-Marie Brisson, Rideau Hall © OSGG, 2026

Today at Rideau Hall in Ottawa, a joyful moment talking with the Governor General of Canada, the Honourable Louise Arbour, who presented me with my medal along with other distinguished Canadians. This is an informal photo taken during lunch; the official photo from the award ceremony will arrive in 1–2 days.

I believe that when we suppress one emotion, we dull them all. We cannot selectively mute sadness and keep joy at full volume. The heart does not work that way.

The Baby on an Air North Flight Who Taught Me About Our Emotional Weather

I believe that when we suppress one emotion, we dull them all. We cannot selectively mute sadness and keep joy at full volume. The heart does not work that way. The baby's laughter was so luminous precisely because his tears were so genuine. They were part of the same wholeness.

Downtime is not only something to endure. It is something to value, the way you value a slow-cooked meal or a story that takes its time. It is the time when your mind reorganizes, when your heart catches up to what your life has been asking of you.

Downtime is not only something to endure. It is something to value.

I remember the first time I realized I was treating sadness like a mistake. I had returned from dancing in cities where everything is bright and fast, where the roads are full of headlights and the days are measured by appointments. After weeks of dancing across Canada, I came back to my cabin, and the quiet felt like an accusation. My body missed the crowd, the smiles, the quick conversations after a performance.

A body can carry sorrow for years in tightened shoulders and a clenched jaw. When I lift my arms under an open sky, I am not trying to outrun sadness. I am giving it space to breathe. There is a kind of positivity that demands a smile as proof of worth, and I do not trust that kind.

Crying can be a bridge between what we feel and what we are ready to admit

Crying can be a bridge between what we feel and what we are ready to admit

Sometimes support looks like tears. Sometimes it looks like stillness. Sometimes it looks like calling a friend and not pretending the day is easy. When people cannot cry, I do not tell them to force it. I tell them they are not broken. I tell them that the heart has more than one language.

By 2026, digital media had engulfed everyday life. In 2026, I created an experience through the tactile, quiet, unhurried act of reading on paper. Inside The Gurdeep Magazine, you’ll find essays crafted for slow, quiet reading, all centered on joy, hope, and positivity. If you'd like to hold printed words that warm your hands, heart and mind, visit http://gurdeep.ca/magazine.

If there is one thing the Yukon teaches, it is that light returns, but it returns on its own time. The healthiest positivity I know is the patience to wait without collapsing, and the courage to act without guarantees. I keep hope in my heart not because it makes everything easy, but because it keeps me open. And an open heart can still laugh, still create, still love, even when the road is rough.

Joy, in its healthiest form, is recognition. It says, I am here. You are here. We are sharing this minute on the same land, under the same wide sky. Happiness is not the elimination of fear and memory. It is learning to hold them without letting them drive.

When I dance in the Yukon cold or a crowded hall, I choose a light that holds the dark without being swallowed

When I dance in the Yukon cold or a crowded hall, I choose a light that holds the dark without being swallowed

At first, I tried to outrun it with noise. I would fill the car with music, podcasts, calls, and plans. I treated joy like a shield. If I stayed bright enough, maybe nothing dark could touch me. But that kind of positivity is like a thin jacket in a northern winter. It looks fine until the wind changes. Then it fails, and you feel foolish for believing it was protection.

Time moves in only one direction, carrying each moment into permanent memory the instant it passes. This fundamental truth, that every moment exists only once and can never truly return, shapes the human experience in profound ways. The past dissolves behind us like footprints in sand. The future shimmers ahead like a mirage on the horizon. Only this present breath, this heartbeat, this now, holds the treasure of genuine joy.

That kind of joy does not demand constant brightness. It does not ask anyone to audition for sweetness. It just says, here we are, still alive, still listening. Even tears can fill the inner vessel with joy, if we let them be part of the water.

Hard days will come the way weather comes, sometimes predicted and sometimes sudden. When they arrive, try to meet them with a steadier story. Tell yourself that difficulty is part of being alive, not a stain on your character. Tell yourself that you can carry joy like a pocket stone, smooth from use. Tell yourself that hope is a skill you can practice. Tell yourself that your energy is precious and your glow is worth protecting.

Dance has become more than a performance for me. It has become a way of meeting myself in silence. When I move, feelings have somewhere to go. Grief can travel down my arms. Anxiety can leave through my feet. Hope can rise through my chest without pretending everything is fine.

The ultimate form of happiness, then, is freedom. Freedom from the need for external validation, freedom from fear-based action. It’s not about feeling artificially elevated or maintaining a forced smile. It’s about the absence of inner turbulence when you stop needing approval and stop being driven by anxiety.

The healthy side of joy is not a command to feel good. It is a capacity to receive what is good when it arrives, even if it arrives softly, even if it arrives while grief is still seated at the table.

Joy, hope, and positivity can sound like soft words for hard times. They do not erase pain, and they do not deny danger. Instead, they help people endure, adapt, and continue to act when circumstances would otherwise overwhelm the body and the mind.

Part of sadness runs deeper than we realize because it is woven into attachment. We feel sad when something we value is threatened, changed, or lost. Even small moments of sadness can reveal how much meaning we place on a person, a place, a plan, or a version of ourselves.

When you stop filling every gap with noise, your senses begin to sharpen. I started noticing things in the Yukon winter that I had walked past a hundred times. The way ravens communicate with an intelligence that feels almost personal. The specific blue of light on snow at four in the afternoon. The sound the trees make when they contract in extreme cold, a sharp crack like a small gunshot that echoes across the valley and then disappears into white.

Our relationship with sadness runs deep because sadness is not a single emotion. It is a convergence of love, memory, limit, and longing. It is the honest response to change in a world we do not fully control. When we approach sadness with respect, it often reveals a quieter strength.

Happiness does not come closer to you when you chase it, because chasing assumes it is missing. When your mind keeps asking, "Did I get enough?" peace and joy cannot stay. You enjoy what comes, but you do not depend on it. Pleasure visits. Pain visits. You welcome both.

True joy has no short-lived shelf life. It doesn’t dim when the weather of your life changes. It appears when you come back into tune with yourself, when you stop pulling in opposite directions, when the search for what you’re “missing” finally loosens its grip around you. In that quiet wholeness, a joy rises, plain, steady, and endlessly renewable.

The dance or any kind of movement is not a denial. It is a hand extended across distance, across culture, across misunderstanding. It says, We can meet here. We can be different and still belong to one another. And when you feel that belonging, even for a moment, you realize happiness is not somewhere else. It is something we build, together, one step at a time.

Let sadness have its place, like a shadow that proves there is light nearby

People often ask me, sometimes softly, sometimes as if it is a riddle they must solve before the next snowstorm arrives, how to be happy in life. I understand the hunger inside that question. I have felt it too. Happiness is more like learning to dance with whatever day has brought, including the heavy days.

At the heart of our restlessness lies a persistent question: "Did I get enough?"This question is a reason that prevents peace from taking root. It creates an endless cycle of achievement and disappointment, where no accomplishment satisfies for long. The mind that constantly measures and compares cannot rest, and without rest, there is no genuine happiness.

When we’re not defensive or defeated, we can ask better questions: What is this situation teaching me? What assumptions need revision? What strengths have I not yet utilized? This investigative approach transforms setbacks into research opportunities, making each difficulty a contributor to our accumulated wisdom rather than evidence of inadequacy.

Inside The Gurdeep Magazine, you’ll find essays crafted for slow, quiet reading, all centered on joy, hope, and positivity.
