Jim Hubbell

Something fun for you fire aficionados today. The volunteer fire department in Santa Claus, Indiana names their apparatus instead of giving them numbers. How did i learn this? Unit Dasher was getting fuel this afternoon at the gas station i was at. The local applied technology college (what California calls a community college) bought this engine for their Fire Academy program for aspiring firefighters. No links because they seem only to have a Facebook page.

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org I'm old enough that I could go to Radio Shack in Placerville to buy crystals for my 4 channel scanner.

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org I'm old enough to remember when we used a lower case l for the number one.

One nice thing about living near the Idaho border is having a neighbor who likes to drive up, get a trailer load of potatoes, and sell them to us. 50# of russets for $21. That will last us well into spring next year.

@icecolbeveridge@mathstodon.xyz @larand@appdot.net @ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org @cookiesinheaven@m.ai6yr.org These ham guys and tech nerds have limited exposure to the outside world. They need to handled gently with love and care. 🥰

This article illustrates why forest management is hard. Federal officials and legislators are calling for more active management such as logging, thinning, prescribed fire, etc. Then in their next breath they insist on immediate suppression of every start. In the background, they cut funding for everything so billionaires can have another tax cut. https://www.sltrib.com/news/environment/2026/07/27/era-megafires-do-forest-thinning/

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org My son in the Army Reserve says their training budget is being diverted to pay for the middle east adventure. This month training was virtual only. Stay at home, log onto the military network, and read appropriate training materials.

@douglasvb@m.ai6yr.org @mlanger@mastodon.world The Strait of Hormuz is still closed and I remember people who understood the flow of oil saying how that would affect the supply on the west coast. Diesel in Utah is about $1 more than gas which has been the ratio for 25 years or more. Our supply comes mostly from Wyoming.

Preparations for 100⁰+ this weekend include installing the window air conditioner that is hidden behind some shade cloth. The shade cloth on the porch is not visible because of the car and shade tent.

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org @paul_ipv6@infosec.exchange @W6KME@mastodon.radio @larand@appdot.net @moira@mastodon.murkworks.net @cookiesinheaven@m.ai6yr.org I memorized this song. It's a tiny bit amusing that some issues that seemed so important in the 60s are still being fought over today. https://youtu.be/MbtkL5_f6-4?is=QtADh1z52lz44pbY

@dgar@aus.social Every C in Pacific Ocean is pronounced differently.

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org Why do they throw in "allegedly". Are the afraid the crocodile will sue them for libel?

@ai6yr @anne Back when Dad was doing timber harvest plans, he had to hike the entire harvest area, looking for archeological sites. If a trash dump was less than 50 years old, no problem. Older than 50 years, it had to be protected. As a side note, he also had to identify spotted owl nests. He learned to not locate them precisely because those site would somehow disappear before logging started.

@MsMerope@sfba.social @ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org Well yeah. Those are delicate machines and must be packaged very carefully.

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org No, it's excellent 50s vibes. Back when life was pure and hopeful. The economy was booming, boomers were just little kids.

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org @sollat@masto.ai @grumpasaurus@infosec.exchange Doubtless they will sell their water rights for a pretty penny.

@sundogplanets I guess they used AI to generate the feasibility study.

@MikeDunnAuthor@kolektiva.social All the changes to tax law enacted under Reagan, Bush, and Trump can be reversed if congress had a spine.

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org @grumpasaurus@infosec.exchange Too bad there is no way to ship produce from one area to another.

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org Trump's economy has made me so much stronger. During Biden, I could only carry $30 of groceries at one time. Now I can carry $70 of groceries on one arm. 🤪

@mattblaze@federate.social Your alt text makes no mention of the graffiti on one of the buildings.

@ai6yr @wd9ewk @MsMerope @cwicseolfor @rombat I think the rule is you have to provide ice cream for all of us every time you make the cover. 🤣🤣

@mattblaze@federate.social @ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org I am comforted knowing now that we "only" have 60,000 nuclear weapons that a demented sociopath with launch authority could use in a fit of madness.

@W6KME@mastodon.radio 🤣🤣🤣

PSA for all you high-speed app developers out there with good eyes. Do not, and I can not emphasize this enough, do not put a graphic feature on your pages that looks like a stray hair on the screen to us old people that already struggle with having to use a tiny phone screen instead of just talking to the nice receptionist at the doctor's office. It just slows down an already confusing process.

@ai6yr @raymaccarthy @ChuckMcManis @msbellows @rombat It's a cheap way to get an agency to pay for your POST training, then they move to a city department as soon as possible for the better pay.

@sarae@ecoevo.social I have an axe i need to rehang. I have the new handle, wedges, and maybe a grinder to shape the wood. Now if I can find the safe place I put my motivation, I'll be all set. 🫠

@angiebaby Back when I was earning a D- in programming, I did learn that strawberry and "strawberry" are two different words.

@josh0@babka.social @dgar@aus.social Hmmm

@ricci@discuss.systems Don't forget the thriving metropolis of Snowville 23 miles to the north and west.

@grumpasaurus@infosec.exchange @ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org @sollat@masto.ai Water is never very far from farmer's thoughts.

@g7izu@universeodon.com @ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org No, you are much too young. 😁

@sarae @ai6yr @anne It's certainly possible I'm misremembering something he said.

@sarae @ai6yr @anne He was following California timber harvest regulations. When he started doing THP in 1985, a typical plan ran about 10-12 pages. By the time he retired in 2005, a plan for the same acreage was upwards of 50 pages.

@mattblaze@federate.social Remember when they refurbished the statue of Liberty? Same stuff.

@ShaulaEvans@zirk.us @ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org @grumpasaurus@infosec.exchange 🙃

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org @cR0w@infosec.exchange Once in a lifetime. Reminds me of do-it-yourself parachute packing. If you catch my drift.

@kim_harding@mastodon.scot I still find it truly baffling why anyone who likes coffee doesn't just plug in the percolator and brew their own at home. Fill the thermos if you want some on the road.

@cdarwin@c.im Traditional views on morality include not having sex with a prostitute while your wife is giving birth, not cheating on taxes, not refusing to pay contractors who do work for you, not lying about everything, not accepting bribes in return for pardons or government favors.

@petergleick@fediscience.org Does that include the water they are robbing from Flaming Gorge?

@ricci@discuss.systems Is it near Camp Williams? My son says there are houses built right up to the fence surrounding the base. Artillery units do their live fire training within earshot of houses.

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org Lucky for you, the dress code in this part of the fediverse is casual with bonus point for homemade/modified.

@paul_ipv6@infosec.exchange @ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org Yes

My bucket list will never be completed. We will never have sniper teams deployed at our wedding.

@Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange Just go to work, do my job, never miss a break, and go home on time.

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org Unfermented potatoes are still legal to transport over state lines. 😄

@keithpjolley@discuss.systems If that much.

@kajer@infosec.exchange @ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org For my situation shade works better than misters. I may reevaluate this weekend when temps are flirting with new records. 😀
