Oh... I just googled it... didn't even know birth certificated are that cheap... Cuz people who do not have birthright citizenship have to pay $500 to file for a replacement Certificate of Naturalization or Certificate of Citizenship... kinda expensive ngl

In China they did. They sterilized women who have more than 1 child so they literally did seize your ability to reproduce. Sorry if this took a serious turn, but every time I think of my mom, that one child policy stuff comes to mind.

I sometimes looked myself in the mirror... like I got so used to seeing my reflection in glasses, that if I ever like go without glasses... say if I get lasik, then I'd look so weird... I literally had this thought earlier today... like... do people who get lasik still wear fake glasses so they look good aesthetically speaking? Or as you said, "to look smart"?

In the US, you go to a post office, and you have to hand over the physical, original copy of your proof of citizenship when apply for the first time so the postal worker can attach to the packet of stuff they send to the US Department of State... and they only give it back after they finished processing your passport application... So while waiting... (takes a few weeks to process) you have: -No Passport -No Certificate of Citizenship/Naturalization or Birth Certificate... Meaning no proof of Citizenship... Which means its kinda awkward if you get approached by government agents during this time... and have no proof of your claim to be a US Citizen... Apparantly for people with birthright citizens, they can just get a birth certificate for like $10-$30, which I didn't know before... TIL But since I'm foreign-born and naturalized (or technically speaking, it's Citizenship via Derivation under the Child Citizenship Act of 2000, but its too complicated and I don't wanna write a paragraph on that), I would need to file a N-565 to get a replacement copy of my proof of citizenship... And it's $500 for the filing fee... Yea I don't think people are gonna really wanna spend $500 just for an extra "backup copy" they statiscally don't need, unless it actually gets lost in the system and then they'd have no choice but to pay $500... And that also takes time to process... (And before you ask: Yes it is night time here, but I don't really feel like sleeping right now lol)

my next door neighbor has a camera that seems to look like a ring... I mean I'm not gonna approach their door for no reason to check if it is a ring, but like... if it is a ring... then oh well, NSA is right by my door. And I'm in a deep blue city btw... neighbor is a renter and is Black, so.... yeah... minority working class inadvertantly have a spy camera on their door Front door is like right next to each other... like the camera can see me walking in the the path into my own house, it makes a sound when it detects movement and I heard the sound thing trigger even when walking only on my side of the yard ...And my family are immigrants... so yay, our movements are probably in an ICE database

>China is a big place. Saturation with security cameras is an urban thing. Yea that incident was in Guangzhou, I assume nowadays its probably filled with surveillance cameras. >Also, something I’ve learned in America is that people make a lot of noise about keeping kids safe, but that’s all just smoke. I can’t speak for China China might not have guns and mass shootings, but domestic abuse is an issue that the law doesn't really touch on, especially is its more covert like *verbal* abuse or even physical violence if it didn't cause serious harm... Especially if its not a spouse-on-spouse thing but its a parent against a child... Like there are things that would trigger a CPS investigation in the US that in China they wouldn't do much about, cuz its just treated as "discipline" and its "family matters" and legal system isn't touching this. I think my parents fear of CPS is why once we arrived in the US, they stopped with their um... *ahem* "disciplinary actions" against me. (Also maybe cuz I got older and can sort of fight back??? Maybe 🤷‍♂️) (I actually cant even remember a specific instance of my mom hitting me anymore... must been a repressed memeory by now, but I'm pretty sure it happened) Also teachers have meter sticks to hit kida with... Okay its not a beating, but I remember like you had to put your hands out and then the teacher slapped your hands with the ruler... Dont remember what for... maybe "behavior problems"? Or perhaps poor grade is also one of the things... idk, memory in 1st and 2nd grade isn't exactly flawless... But corporal punishment seems very acceptable in China... Saw a movie recently about *Taiwan*'s education system (not the main story, but the backdrop of the plot, main movie was about Taiwanese Americans moving back to Taiwan), and in the plot, the parents encouraged the teacher to use the ruler thing as a form of discipline... wtf... that was actually the thing that jogged my memories... (The point being, same culture, even being politically divided and with a different government, the culture is same... adults just get to do whatever as "discipline")

>but we don’t have the 996 mentality here by a long shot When I was in China I have memories of my mom taking me to her workplace when I was a kid (I think because nobody was at home, grandma was supposed to be watching us but I can't remember why she wasn't available for some reason), she worked in some electronic store doing sales. I remember play some (probably bootleg) games on a portable DVD player and like you put this disc in it then you connect a controller and voila... you play video games on it... I remember feeling so lonely just by myself in this sort of mall-like place with a lot of people walking by, while mom worked, barely had time to check on me... so I just played games alone by myself... I mean I don't remember it vividly as in every detail, I was still like either like preschool/kindergarden age or 1st/2nd grade, but I remember the general vibe around there. I had an older brother but he wasn't there so idk whete the hell he was. I remember the direction to my mom's workplace (by now, I've forgotten it, but I used to just have a sense of direction) But yea mom was so busy, dad had trouble finding a stable job, constantly job-seeking. "Childcare" is just finding relatives, usually the kid's grandparents, according to my mom, it's said that my paternal grandparents, US permanent residents, refused to watch over us even during their short visit from the US. Mom worked overtime a lot. Like I remember sometimes just being at home and mom and dad come home so late. My aparment had this weird child-proof lock thingy that my parents could just lock in from the outside in case no adults was home since they didn't want their kids to go wandering outside. (firehazard lol, jeez dad wtf) >ERs accept everyone, but all they can do is basic treatment of acute conditions. Not sure how they are as of right now, but in China, for a long time, they'd require you to pay before getting ER treatment >Medical debt is incredibly hard to collect on too. In China, they can go after family members... >Americans just don’t understand how good they have it Lol I remember my family didn't have internet until we left China... I lived in a very slum-looking area of Guangzhou right next to the 白云山 (Baiyun mountain). I asked recently about the internet thing and my dad said they were just starting to install internet like very late, like around 2010 around when we left, my dad said it was expensive... so for us, we never got internet in China Never got to experience the "golden age of internet" that most of y'all talk about... cuz I didn't even get an internet at all. Parents didn't really use internet until like 2014 and smartphones became ubiquitious and then soon afterwards they installed Wechat. That's like the only thing they use lol. There's a lot of like worker safety stuff that China just doesn't have, also no independent unions and strike-action was uncommon and almost unheard of until we got to the US and then hear about strikes on the news so often it's kinda a culture shock. Food safety was so... meh... Mom mom used to warn me about the food safety thing all the time, stories about people smuggling in milk formula from Hong Kong because there was so much fake milk in mainland. My mom didn't trust the milk and she said she just breastfed me. Water needs to be boiled... When I found out that Americans just drank from the tap, that was sort of a culture shock. So after I found out about that, I often drink from the tap cuz I'm often thirsty and didn't wanna waste time boiling water, also didn'r like warm water... I mean why not, we're in the US after all (as long as "Flint, Michigan" doesn't happen its gonna be fine), my parents still have the habit of boiling water... I feel like they're just wasting electricity lol... The only thing I liked was the subways in Guangzhou had the platform safety doors... I remember when I first arrived in NYC, I often have fears about just falling into the tracks, cuz the lack of doors... but yea that's like the safety doors only thing I really missed

Except that the US requires hospitals to treat those who arrive in the ER¹ then they bill you to bankrupt you later. In China, you have to pay first before getting even emergency treatment. (Common trope in Chinese TV shows is a character gets sick and family can't pay for an expensive emergency surgery and they somehow find a rich relative to pay for it)

(¹excluding chronic conditions like cancer, apparantly)

Yeah, but they took the original copy to be mailed to the department of state, for Online Renewals it doesn't need to leave your hands, but I'm not eligible for a renew cuz my last one was issued in 2016/2017 when I was under 16 (valid only for 5 years), and I don't even have it anymore.

I have a printed-copy of the Certificate and digitized versions stored on my phone... but my point is, it feels "less legit" to present it compared to the physical original copy.

According to google (I am not a lawyer) I don't have it anymore the moment I got US citizenship since they don't do dual citizenship and honestly I don't really want to live in mainland China. If I had to leave the US, I rather go to Canada, Australia, or perhaps EU for asylum... Or perhaps Taiwan, or maybe Singapore. I know from your post history, you seem to like PRC, but please understand that I have a personal grudge against the CCP, I was the second child (precisely a second *son* so there was no exemption whatsoever) in my family born during the One Child Policy, I really hate the fact that they tried to terminate me when I was still a fetus, then afterwards deny my existence by refusing to issue my legal documents until they made my parents pay a huge fine... which feels like extortion IMO. I feel like my existence in China is "illegal", I feel rejected. I don't wanna be there. I have an existential crisis over it... I'm not even supposed to be alive in this world, I'm an anomoly.

Edit: But nowadays, ironically, they have population crisis... 👀

Me in the mid 2000s running away from home and my mom had m the police searching for me...

(context: older brother was abusibe and chased me around the house to fight me and I got scared and so I ran)

This was Guangzhou, China...

my mom later told me about the supposed widespread kidnappings throught the country and said I could've been kidnapped...

I still have trauma from that day. 🫠

Oh yea I remember my parents installed those child safety lock thing that can allow you to lock the apartment door from the outside with the key... so that we can't run away when no adults are at home... Fire Hazard wtf...

If you were already planning on using a specific carrier, buying a locked phone is cheaper. Like for a extremely frugal example: A Samsung Galaxy A15 is $200, a locked version can be as low as $60. Still the same 5 year security updates (presumably, unless the carrier fucks with it). But if you were gonna use X carrier from the start, then then it doesn't cost you extra. You can still use that cheap plan same as if you BYOD. And it used to unlock in 60 days, so before this policy took effect, you could just switch carriers after 2 months.

Why would you even try to convince an illegitimate gonverment to do something? Like if the confederates took over DC, do you send them a nice letter? Its illegitimate, and people who sworn an oath to the constitution should really try to take back control and restore constitutional order. As in the way the Union dealt with the confederates. The Union held an election during the civil war, they simply just don't count the electors from the rebel states, so we just do the same right now. Pro-constitution states should get together, hold federal elections in those states, and declare those elected officials to be the real United States government. Edit: Legal disclaimer, this is hypothetically speaking of course, I do not condone violence

Eh, it’s a different place now. My family who worked there in the 90s and 2000s had completely alien experiences to when I went there in last year. All I’m saying is it’d be wise to be aware of what options you have.

Mental health acceptance is stilk a huge issue. My mom told me about a story where allegedly someone in either her village or a neighboring village (can't even understand what exactly she said because I'm not as fluent in Cantonese as English) had a family that has a son that "doesn't act normal" and instead of trying to help, they perceived him as a threat and just locked him inside the house, barely treated him like a human being and only fed him out of pity... like an animal on a barn...

And also my mom just told me a story on WeChat about in Guangdong, an autistic person that got accepted into a University but then they found out about his autism so they expelled him for that after he already got accepted. So yeah... that would've caused outrage in the west. There is not really an ADA equivalent in China.

My mother kinda lowkey hates me for having depression... can't imagine what's its like in China, everyone would just call me "lazy" or "useless eater" or some shit... China is very conservative, its MAGAland but with Chinese Characteristics.

Also, if I posted any of my posts that I posted here about my mother's behaviors on the Chinese internet... oh jeez they're gonna just attack me for being "unfilial", at least westerners sort of sympathize. In China, parents are always right, the kids are always wrong.

My ideal country would be one with a lot of Asians (or more specifically, ethnic Han Chinese) but that are westernized. Cuz then I have safety of not having to deal with racism, but also not having to deal with conservative culture bullshit.

Like just build one massive island then gather all the Westernized ethnic Han Chinese there, build our own country, without authoritarian bullshit, then I'd be safe.

Honestly, I think about my family and its gets weirder and more bizzare the more I think about it. For context, most families in China during the era I was born in was suppsed to have only 1 child… but mom decide to violate policy… So my older brother was originally supposed to be an only child if the policy was obeyed… So this is what happens with most families: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Emperor_Syndrome I’m not sure if my brother really knew about One Child Policy at that age, but regardless, I think he got really jealous when after 5 years of being my parents sole focus… suddenly he learns that someone else is gonna be joining the family… Like he’ll no longer have the sole attention… I think that’s why he views me as an adversary. I mean, I remember being extrememly clingy to my mom when I was 8-12… I think he must’ve gotten really jealous when he saw me cuddling with my mom… like… dude why didn’t you cuddle with mom then? lmao Literally I feel like as we got older we have this cold war to win mom’s favor in order to try to gain a larger share of the inheritance (we didn’t really have much back then, but now parents have more stuff so naturally more… envy of each other… of how much mom likes the other one). I mean I get it… when I was like 12 or so… my mom joked about wanting a 3rd child and I was like: noooo pleasee don’t divert attention away from me but mom can’t actually have another child due to the forced sterilization after the government found out she had given birth to me.

I think it’d be funny if the energy bending thing was given like a final “oh you actually don’t have to kill” but then this power actual fails when the final battle comes… then Aang is like wtf and hesitates but then goes through a bit of internal mental battle and then finally finds the will to kill Ozai anyways and I feel like this would be better character development than a weak-ass oh I didn’t kill anyone, just crippled him for life Like you know those movie plot where a character is like “oh I’ll be the bait and lure the enemy and you’ll kill them” and promises they won’t be in danger, then like when the plan goes through, it’s revealed that that character’s sacrifice was always necessary but they lied so its easier for that one empathetic character to go along with the plan. Like imagine the lion turtle actually did that instead, it’d be so much better as a plot.
