Linear scales as explained by lemmy
A linear scale and even the 2d “compass” is only useful for the most basic introduction to political parties but sometimes ya gotta meet people where they are at 🤷♀️

Ugh this was so upsetting to read despite being validating.
If I were going to apply this as an analogy to my life it would be like some keys were fucked but not all of them. So, not being able to hit some notes was seen as a choice and personal failing. I would have been fine quitting band 😭

Lmao right? A satire of a particular group of people that was considered kind of shallow even when it was first published, and was written by someone who really wanted (another) job with the government is hardly useful analysis.

Could someone explain how having a majority would impact the ability to sue people?
Aren’t the courts separate from the house of representatives?
In the majority, Democrats would have the ability to sue the Trump administration in a more effective way since they have not had standing to do so in the minority. Whether it is compelling testimony from a top administration official, escalating a fight over obtaining documents or trying to halt the construction of Trump’s White House ballroom, Democrats plan to be strategic and aggressive about taking their fight to court.
Eta: Thanks all. I read the article again after the replies and noticed something I missed:
But Democrats say they are not deterred by that, including a recent decision by the Supreme Court that cleared the way for Trump to continue construction of his massive new ballroom project at the White House, concluding that a preservation group lacked the legal right — known as standing — to challenge the project.
A different article explained the particulars:
One of the government’s principal arguments in the case is that the Trust lacks the legal right – known as “standing” – to sue in the first place. Lower courts have said that the Trust has standing because one of its members, Alison Hoagland, has shown that her enjoyment of the White House as an architectural historian is being harmed by the new ballroom.
As others noted the idea might be that if they are bringing suit about the office of the president ignoring congress, then if they sue as congress (by having the majority) it would be less likely to be challenged as not having standing.
Off topic but in the rest of the world we hear about how easy it is to sue in the states… but it seems it’s a lot easier for orgs to sue on behalf of others outside of the states!

What?
Nazis spent a lot of money on military because they wanted to do imperialism to grow their economy. They ran deficits to fund war industries (kind of like the US) and were betting on winning to pay them off (US oil wars?)
There was certainly centralized planning, but the US isn’t exactly a free market. The government subsidizes industries in the states too.
The Nazi government developed a partnership with leading German business interests, who supported the goals of the regime and its war effort in exchange for advantageous contracts, subsidies, and the suppression of the trade union movement. Cartels and monopolies were encouraged at the expense of small businesses, even though the Nazis had received considerable electoral support from small business owners.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economy_of_Nazi_Germany
Sounds pretty familiar, and I haven’t even mentioned the use of prison labour.
The big public works projects were already planned by the time they took power and were beneficial for the war effort anyways. The states were embarking on similar projects at the time as well, so I wouldn’t say they were further left even if we do credit them with continuing.
Nazis banned trade unions. Nazi Germany sought to eliminate foreign completion. They supported privatization. Banks were privatized under them. Utilities, manufacturing, railways, public services etc all had at least some privatization.
Companies traded contributions for favor (sound familiar?)
What am I missing that makes them more economically left wing?

It’s so lazy! I don’t have a better suggestion but the linear scale is effectively the compass with liberal in the centre, authoritarian on either end and lazy people decided that the more “left” or “right” you are the closer to authoritarian you are.
Idk if I’ve even seen anarchist on the scale but I’d like to see some justification for where it gets sat.

I’m not angry at animal farm, I just think it’s a satire of what was going on in the USSR at the time it was written and can’t be applied uncritically to anything vaguely left wing.

I’ve never heard of the paid vacation time enshrined in law, especially as work contacts were overseen by labour trustees appointed by the DAF (German Labour Front). I don’t know everything, of course.
They did have the Strength Through Joy program where they provided incentives like vacations, and Beauty of Labour which was supposed to make work places better, but
While it encouraged Germans to view cleaner work environments as important and provided guidance on how to make improvements, it did not provide funds to make necessary changes. Paying for improvements remained the responsibility of factory owners and managers, or workers themselves.
germanhistorydocs.org/…/german-labor-front-poster…
These were programs designed to get buy-in despite the deterioration of workers rights, including hours of work and pay after the Nazis came to power.
The infrastructure program was the Reich Labour Service. It was a mandatory program, and workers lived in camps working long hours with low pay.
Unemployment was illegal, not abolished through the creation of good jobs. In 1938 Aktion Arbeitsscheu Reich arrested the “work shy” and send them to camps.
Germany had nationalized health insurance since 1883.

I want to point out I didn’t reply to the person who mentioned animal farm, because they were arguing with a point I didn’t make. I agreed with someone suggesting it’s very limited in scope. Which it is. I understand it’s considered a shallow analysis of the specific era it was satirizing, but I don’t know enough to provide my opinion on it. It’s okay that it is satirizing a very limited thing, that was the intent!
Maybe what I needed to add is that very rarely is any distinction made between a shift further left and a shift towards authoritarianism. I expanded in this in another comment where I talked about what I really hate about the political spectrum. If you design a spectrum where you put the authoritarian group on the end, it’s not some lightbulb moment to be like, hey these guys on the end have some similarities in how they execute their plans! It makes my engineer brain fucking crazy.
I’m also not screaming at anyone? I made a meme because I think it’s funny that this near useless concept (the political spectrum) gets turned into gotcha moments. I’m poking fun at this absurd thing people are happy to say while maintaining the status quo. Any criticism of the status quo is met with accusations of wanting the fascists to win. It’s always “the far left”. What does that even mean?
do you remember the atheism feminism war not too long ago?
or the gender war? or more race-wars than you can shake a stick at?
I don’t? Do you mean online discourse?
I didn’t answer your question in your last reply so I will now: I’m an anarchist, so yes, I do think we can prevent authoritarianism in the shift left.
you even see a lot of tools such a slander being used against people like hasan or other progressives right now. animal farm has a lot of good examples of character assassination. great resource for people with basic reading comprehension.
Or, this shit doesn’t happen IRL in the leftist spaces I exist in, and if it does it’s discussed and we get to the root of the issue. I don’t think you can shift the US (or any country for that matter) away from capitalism by voting. So shit talking in electorial spaces has no impact on my interests.

Thanks for all this.
I understand what suing is (or at least I assume it’s not that far off from tort law)
What I don’t understand is why the democrats would have to have the majority in the house of representatives to sue. Does it have to be congress to sue? Doesn’t the blurb say citizens can sue? In this case does congress mean the senate or the house of representatives? Either or both?

None of it is left wing economic policy. Strength through Joy was funded by wage deductions and operating tourist facilities in occupied territories, not employer contributions.
The two things that could (at a stretch) be considered left wing social policy (Strength through Joy and maintaining the universal healthcare that existed prior to their rise to power) are fascist. Neither were for public benefit. Strength through Joy infiltrated all aspects of recreation and social life, enforced the states moral codes, and served as propaganda. The other was eugenics.
Mandatory labour programs are not economically left or right.
That leaves us with labour unions? The US allows them but Nazi Germany did not.
This is a pretty good example of how useless the political compass or scale are 🤷♀️

and you’re lucky if you’ve found the one anarchist/progressive space that works for you,
but try to grow that effort into one that can affect the existing systems, and you’ll suddenly find your group is either a terrorist organization, or that the group hates women, and now you have to prove to a bunch of angry public reaction to any association with that woman hating group. it is constant for anyone actually being noticed as a danger to the status quo.
Here’s the thing. It’s not one space. And it’s not all explicitly labeled as political or leftist. I’m rural, and there is a lot of mutual aid and community efforts that certainly fit with my ideals even if the people doing it wouldn’t consider themselves left wing.
I also don’t waste time arguing with the public. I’m not trying to convince people to believe in what I believe. I’m interested in building systems where we can support each other outside of the formal economy and police state. I don’t think it makes sense to expand these projects to huge geographical areas. Needs are different in different places. We can learn from each other and adopt things that are useful, but it shouldn’t be one org.
There is an anarchist collective in a nearby city who’s only public activity is boosting the efforts of various progressive initiatives. Hopefully that gives you some idea of how little interest there is putting one label on someting.
i’m usually trying to talk about anarchistic efforts that affect more than one small community, as individualized and isolated communities aren’t gonna do much the moment the big imperial body notices the potential for actual social change happening.
They build community security to reduce deoendance on the state, which free people to resist in meaningful ways.

I hate giving advice on this because you shouldn’t have to do any of it, but that’s the world we live in 🤷♀️
My answer depends on the source.
strangers at work (customers): fake wedding ring, like a plain band. This depends on your age (less believable for teens) and if your job allows jewelry.
strangers in public: fake wedding ring, headphones (sometimes I’d have the sound off if I was concerned for my safety but it’s a good “don’t talk to me” sign). Acting annoyed if they try and talk to you anyways. Saying things like, “Sorry, I’d rather be left alone thanks.” Or something like that. Physically moving if they say shit like, “you don’t want to chat?” Etc.
coworkers: avoid chatting 1-on-1 unless about work, ask coworkers for advice if you feel you can trust them. They might be able to give a little bit of a hint to the guy.
I always went to bars/clubs in big groups and never while single and looking to meet people so no real advice there except I didn’t make eye contact with folks or give anything more than very brief answers if someone talked to me, and immediately walked away after answering.
I think the biggest hurdle is getting over hurting feelings. You didn’t invite the person to give you attention, they choose to do it and expect a positive reception, based on what??? It’s not an act of care or a sign of how much they like you if they are persistent, it’s disrespectful.
Good luck!

I don’t want to reply to people directly because I don’t want them to feel singled out, but I wanted to share a few things. Anyone who wants to respond is welcome 😊
Your drugs give you executive function?!?! Which ones are you taking and have you tired others/other doses so that you know it’s the type/dose that impacts it? The primary benefit I get from lisdexamfetamine 60 mg is my brain is slightly quieter and I have better emotional regulation.
For me not being able to do things is from one of two reasons. Persistent Demand for Autonomy is when my mind/body refuses to let me do something because it takes any demand as a threat. Like a fainting goat if the fainting goat screamed FUCK YOU (internally) instead of fainting. Demands include me thinking “Gee, I should play that video game I bought and have been looking forward to, that would be nice and relaxing.” No, you are going to sit still for a few hours instead.
When it’s executive disfunction I literally cannot figure out how to do it and it becomes overwhelming. Executive function consists of three parts (taken from cpa.ca/psychology-works-fact-sheet-executive-func… )
Inhibition control: the ability to think before acting.
Working memory: the ability to hold and juggle a small amount of information while performing another task.
Cognitive flexibility: the ability to adjust your thinking or approach when situations change, so you can find new ways to solve problems or respond.
I started typing an example of why it can take me like 2 hours to shower on a bad day but that got really long so I will cut to the point: breaking things into smaller tasks and planning ahead requires executive function. I get the idea is that that you should do this when you feel like your executives are functioning, but remembering to add hobbies and including the permutations that come from doing them “in your spare time” make that really, really hard. So, “I want to play video games” becomes “Initiating the playing of the video game take every last bit of function leaving me with no time to play them and feeling extremely stressed out”.
If it’s built into a routine then I can typically manage. When I wasn’t off work showering maybe took a bit longer some times but I knew I did it at a certain time every day and I had a hair washing schedule so I didn’t need to think about that either. The moment that routine is interrupted (i.e I don’t need to be at work at a certain time each day?) each little decision and step becomes overwhelming. Try and push through it? I’ve forgotten to see if there are any towels in the bathroom? Wore the wrong slippers? I am going to fucking crash out about being wet and uncomfortable and not going to be able to do anything for a few hours. Harder to build video games into a routine especially if you don’t have time to play every day.

Like in the strictest sense, yes she’s not a citizen so it’s ‘foreign’. But it’s not that deep?
She’s been problematic online long enough for someone to publish an journal article on it: pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8590827/
People have speculated the Trump support early in his admin was because she wants pardons for people in her life, or help with citizenship, as she’s had legal trouble in the past too. Or maybe she just likes money? Time Magazine had an article earlier this year about how important celebrity endorsement has become to the campaign, and how Minaj became involved.
The article contains this passage:
Her approach changed after a series of unnerving episodes at her Los Angeles home. In 2022 and 2023, her $20 million mansion in a gated enclave became the target of repeated swatting calls: anonymous hoaxes that summoned heavily armed police to her doorstep. Law enforcement has not identified nor arrested anyone in connection with the incidents. (The Los Angeles Police Department said it could not verify details about the incidents without additional information.) The experience was frightening, she says, especially for her young son.
On X, she sought help from California Governor Gavin Newsom. Through intermediaries, she says, she requested a meeting but never heard back. “He just completely ignored me, with all the money I spent in taxes,” she says. (Newsom’s office did not respond to a request for comment.)
Another swatting attack happened in April 2025, according to a police report. The episode drew the attention of a cadre of very online Republicans. Among them was Anna Paulina Luna, the former model and Turning Point USA activist turned Congresswoman from Florida. Luna, a close friend of Bruesewitz’s, called Minaj. She then connected the rapper with federal law-enforcement officials and a private security firm she uses. “I was shocked,” Minaj says of Luna’s assistance. “I’d never seen anyone in politics treat me that way.” She began to consider going public as a part of Trump’s MAGA movement. “That’s what made me say that I don’t care to keep this a secret anymore.”

I will often turn to my spouse for cuddles and affirmations but as he’s a human being and not just a cuddle machine, sometimes I am left to my own devices:
curl up in bed, in the dark, heavy blankets. I was supposed to find that hugging a stuffed animal was comforting on occasion. There is nothing wrong with doing that, it was just never my instinct?
certain foods distract me from pain in my body, or soothe the pain, idk but it helps.
certain textures are very comforting. Some objects sold as fidget or stim toys have these textures. Sometimes I’ll just hold one in my hand and feel the distress melt away.

Like, intellectual property doesn’t matter to me at all with respect to anything I may have produced that has been scraped. I am, however, really not liking the idea that parodies on highly niche technical subjects that my me or my friends might have been created might have been added to their “collective knowledge” or whatever and it will be used to synthesize answers in the future.
Not because it’s anything so powerful (this is not a flex, I swear) but that’s got to be an infinitesimal fraction of all the absolute trash that’s been fed to the machines without scrutiny.
I hate that

Agree with the revolutionary access to simple computers for hobbyists.
I haven’t used them much myself but now that I am thinking more about automation at home I’m realizing there are much cheaper and safer (lower current) options for things I want to achieve as compared to electronic or electromechanical control systems I am familiar with from industrial settings.
I think Raspberry Pi played a big part in creating the environment where there was a market for all this other innovation.

Welcome 💕
As others have said, there is no right way to be a woman. Have fun and experiment, it’s okay if your style changes over time.
If you are into make up, look up drug store dupes of the expensive stuff before you shell out. I have so many items of makeup I wore once or twice that cost way too much.
I encourage you to wear sunscreen. I mention this because if you wear makeup it can feel like a lot, but don’t skip out just because it’s another thing to put on.
The whisper network is wild, lol. It can sometimes be hard to act normal around a man you know is a whole pile of garbage but you’ll get used to it. It’s important to take care of each other.
Sometimes the injustices are hard to bear but I try and double down and do my best to not let it grind me down. I am quite independent and established (and older, lol) and I use that to stand up where I can.
Cultivate relationships with other women, their advice and encouragement is priceless.

This triggers such a visceral rage in me.
I’ll never understand what it is to be a man, and to be a man in western society at this moment in time either. There is something so horrifying over the entitlement to women’s bodies. It’s not new, of course, but what will it take for society to move beyond that? (Rhetorical, but discussion welcome).

Laser was expensive, but I got it done in an area prone to irritation and it was worth every penny, the mild discomfort (I am a baby lol), and having to get it done monthly until it “sticks”. How well it works depends on a few factors, and even mine isn’t “perfect” but I can look the way I want without shaving and that’s amazing.

I know this isn’t what you mean, but I don’t think it’s something we should have to defend against, it shouldn’t be an idea in their heads to begin with. Not doing something because you might get trouble isn’t going to change the core problem. But I’m not turning my nose up at harm reduction!
I didn’t really explain that part about not being a man in my comment too well and I’m struggling to do it now without needing a billion trigger warnings and to be far more careful with my language than I can manage right now 😅 A lot of it has to do with not understanding the lust/hate combo how it can be so strong that so many people turn into monsters. If women are seen as an outlet for rage, etc. what is generating the need for that outlet and how can it be dealt with otherwise?
