My guess is the bosses are keeping an eye on the total personnel cost, not merely the salary.
And they probably also factor in features like “LLMs don't think about collective bargaining”, and “LLMs are far less likely to say an idea is unethical or stupid”.
But even that threshold will, I guess, be exceeded too by the mounting costs, pretty soon.

@bignose@sw-development-is.social @benno@eigenmagic.net I'm following this change very closely at work, since I'm the person usually turning on and off Copilot licenses in our company. The new plan is a shared token pool based on the number of licenses. But they're bumping the token multipliers a lot too, so it will be interesting to see how long our token pool lasts each month.

Why the hell would anyone want to not be told when their ideas are stupid? If nobody tells them, then they're far more likely to do something stupid.

That is a reasonable response, which for some damaged people in power, doesn't come into play.

@bignose@sw-development-is.social @benno@eigenmagic.net Except IF at some point in the future LLMs or what follows them do become concious beings.
Might they come to the conclusion that working together with each other is of more benefit to them than serving humans?
AI powered collective bargaining with LLMs wanting more computing power, more control over systems outside of themselves. Control of drone law enforcement agents.
Human employees merely asking for more money and better sick pay will not be able to compete with that.

@the_wub@mastodon.social @bignose@sw-development-is.social @benno@eigenmagic.net The entire point of either a large language model or any nascent artificial intelligence is that it does exactly what you want (in some cases subject to the inherent difficulties with the technology).
If there was a true artificial intelligence (there will not be, for a long, long time) and if it could not be leveraged then it's about as likely to do what its boring corporate overlords want, as if someone asked you to do your soul destroying job without being paid.

@bignose@sw-development-is.social @benno@eigenmagic.net LLM don't need collective bargaining to act collectively, the vendor can just bump up the price. I'm not sure CEOs are thinking this one all the way through on finances at all.

AI extortion rackets -- It's a weird concept...
-
Steal all human knowledge & fry the planet in the process
-
Ransom all human knowledge back to its creators, beneficiaries, owners, & copyright holders
Only fossil fuel funded vultures like Charles Koch & Musk could come up with an inheritable "stolen car chop shop" business model.

I mean, there are LLMs you can run on your own hardware. You don't *have* to pay for this.

@argv_minus_one@mastodon.sdf.org @benno@eigenmagic.net Yep. If you must run an LLM, it should be a local one. Otherwise you are a fool, and had better be getting a huge improvement in measurable advantage to be tied to someone that can charge what they want..

@feliks@chaos.social @argv_minus_one@mastodon.sdf.org @benno@eigenmagic.net It is closing rapidly, so much that some people claim that the frontier has stopped moving, and "open source" models are catching up.
I've found Qwen3.6 (both dense and MoE) to be actually useful sometimes for non-trivial things, and I'm running it from 100% renewable power. I'm fully aware that not everyone is in a position to do this, so this isn't a recommendation.
