@Sylvhem@eldritch.cafe @fionafokus@mystical.garden It kinda is, though. It predates the idea of people with cellphones that have Internet access, and it's multi-device support is... bad. Senders have to choose WHICH of the logged in devices a message goes to, and if they choose wrongly? You don't find out until you get home and realise someone message you while you were say, out at work. There's also no built-in cryptography, and the 3rd party hacks are super fragile and prone to randomly turning off silently.

@hadley@plush.city @Sylvhem@eldritch.cafe @fionafokus@mystical.garden with Message Archive Management turned on, I haven't had problems synchronizing history between multiple devices. I don't think that's a problem anymore.

@fionafokus@mystical.garden @linus@donotsta.re it kills me when the original image is deployed even in “the new standard envelops an older one or is otherwise backwards compatible in practice so does not in fact increase the cardinality in a real sense” but people are so into posting that comic Probably the most damaging XKCD comic of all time? On account of most of them not causing much damage at all 😂

@fionafokus@mystical.garden How come in tech circles the solution is always to throw all out and start from scratch but in politics you take over a party and mold it like you want it?

@eq_@mastodon.social @fionafokus@mystical.garden Because it's often less effort to do it over than to change a huge software project piecemeal. Bad software design can not be fixed with little effort.

@hooly@social.tchncs.de @fionafokus@mystical.garden Usually it has more to do with the urge to use the latest tech and nothing to do with bad design. And it almost always ends up reinventing the same bugs that already were fixed in the old implementation. And introducing new ones. Just because the previous one was old does not mean the new one will be better.

@eq_@mastodon.social @fionafokus@mystical.garden To give a prominent example where molding would never have worked: Wayland was designed from scratch because X11 and its de facto standard implementation Xorg had design defects that precluded many usecases and features one would expect from a modern display system. The issue here was the design of X11, the specification, which was wholly unsuited for the needs and reality of modern hardware and usecases, and genuinely required something completely new.

@eq_@mastodon.social @fionafokus@mystical.garden Politics doesn't have rigid backwards-compatibility requirements. In tech, some of the problems are inherent to the standard in question, and rewriting is easier than trying to morph one standard/system into another that's fundamentally different.

@eq_@mastodon.social @fionafokus@mystical.garden imo two main reasons: often, a codebase can be so out of date and/or have so much tech debt that it's actually easier to start overyou can't really change a protocol that's already in deployment. otherwise people with the newer version won't be able to talk to people with the old version and vice versa, therefore defeating the point of having a protocol

@fionafokus@mystical.garden In the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s and 2010s there was only one real standard in the PC industry. Silicon Valley engineers are highly intelligent, but the CEOs, CTOs and industry at large are collectively stupid.
