@Fluse@social.cologne @dogzilla@masto.deluma.biz US taxes are like shopping at Wal*Mart. You pay less at the checkstand, but you’ll keep paying. Once you’ve replaced the cheap* boots a hundred times, you’ve paid ten times as much and never been comfortable.

Americans are ready to tear out their neighbour's eyes because of how terrible things are getting, but don't you dare suggest they have anything to learn from anyone else. They'll take their socialism in the form of GoFundMe campaigns the moment someone gets sick, thank you very much. They'll be reduced to asking for charity when the time comes. Until then, self-reliance!!!

Why does Denmark consistently rank among the happiest countries?
Denmark vs Australia.
77 vs 33% renewables.
Denmark is also home to Vestas, 100% renewables company who are struggling to gain approvals in Australia. eg Winterbourne in Walcha, NSW, which *just happens* to be in Barnaby Joyce's electorate of New England.

Just doing away with my monthly healthcare bill (before Medicare) would have saved me $11,400 per year. And if I had gotten sick I'd be on the hook for a $7000 deductible. Yes, I'd be willing to pay all of that in taxes to get good worry free healthcare.

As somebody who has lived in both USA and DK, I will add one thing:
In Denmark we pay less than they pay in USA, and we get something much more valuable for for our money: Peace of mind.
We are not scared shit-less that getting sick or unlucky is going to bankrupt us.
If we break a leg, involved in a traffic-accident or otherwise incapacitated, we get taken, for free, to the nearest emergency, where they what they can for us, and at no time will money, pre-approvals, in- vs. out- of network or co-pays be mentioned, because all of those are inhuman and evil USA inventions.
And we do not stay in shitty jobs, because quitting would mean our kids and loved ones lost health-care.
(Which is why our bosses are a lot less shitty too btw.)
And that is why the Scandinavian countries again and again are rated happiest countries in the world: Peace of mind from single-payer socialized healthcare for all.

Yup, & you don't have the depression & fear we have here. Way back in the 50's & 60's we were pushing for that same kind of economy. Simple straight forward with everyone having access to the necessities of life. Which is when the morons started screaming Socialism, Communism when most have no clue what that economy really is. So you folks laugh while running your capitalism with a little common sense & compassion for the human condition.
Peace

@dogzilla@masto.deluma.biz But the U.S. way leaves wiggle room to think that we're pullin' somethin' over on the guv'mint by getting some money back after tax day. That distracts us from the fact we're paying more overall.
(Also, it allows those with *lots* of money the ability to pay *way* lower taxes - if any - than us little guys.)

Preaching to the converted here, but perhaps the obvious needs to be said sometimes:
High tax countries generally have a comparatively small wealth gap. Less inequality leads to higher levels of happiness and general life satisfaction. Also everyone’s needs are met, therefore there is less divide and conquer by politicians.
But I think there is a big caveat with Denmark - how happy are the Greenlanders?

@dogzilla@masto.deluma.biz @JugglingWithEggs@mstdn.social Just did a quick search and I couldn't find any data linked directly to Greenland (they are usually counted as being part of Denmark).
That being said - I would guess that they are not as "happy" as (native) Danes, but I would be surprised if there was a causal correlation between that and our welfare system (that Greenland is a part of)

‘In 2023, 17.4% of Greenlandic households lived below 60% of the median equivalized income, the highest rate among Nordic countries. For context, Denmark and Norway maintain relatively stable rates at 12% and 11%, while Sweden’s recent increase to 16% reflects broader regional trends. Although Greenland’s poverty rate is just slightly above the EU average of 16.2%’

I would equally argue that the UK poverty rate is higher than Greenland:
‘More than 13.4 million people in the UK—roughly 20% of the total population—live in relative poverty, surviving on household incomes below 60% of the median average.’
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c3w38qvz195o
Are Brits less happy than Greenlanders - quite probably!

I suggest you have a chat with a financial planner sometime, see if they think your strategy makes any sense. Assuming you *dont* want to throw away money that is.
