@IamHappyToast@mastodon.social There's really daunting statistics on what Meat and Dairy industry (Animal Agriculture) is doing to the #Environment, all backed up with sources & studies. Eg: Animal agriculture is responsible for up to 91% of Amazon destruction. Avoiding #meat and #dairy is ‘single biggest way’ to reduce your impact on Earth https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/may/31/avoiding-meat-and-dairy-is-single-biggest-way-to-reduce-your-impact-on-earth More at https://reddit.com/MyOwnVeganWiki/wiki/environment #vegan Our World In Data (Oxford University) Environmental impacts of #food production: https://ourworldindata.org/environmental-impacts-of-food

@moshtodon that guardian article is sensationalizing the actual study, which does not make such a strong claim. for good reason: being vegan doesn't cause the animal agriculture industries to shrink. @IamHappyToast edit: it also, like the other "information" you presented, relies on the poore-nemecek paper, which I find dubious

@bigMouthCommie@fe.disroot.org it's all about offer and demand: the more vegans, the fewer the demand. As we discussed, without the vegan movement, more non-vegan products would be bought, and therefore the bigger would be this kind of industries. So it definitely shrinks the growth, which is the real statement here. I'm fine with you thinking is dubious, although I don't know why. Growing soy crops to feed cows and taking away the dairy from them is way more insustituible than just drinking soy milk.

@moshtodon@mastodon.social

the more vegans, the fewer the demand

but we know that's absolutely not the case: despite a growing number of vegans, the animal agriculture industries have also continued to grow. there is no less demand now than ever.

@bigMouthCommie@fe.disroot.org I'm not saying there's less demand than before, I'm saying there's less demand that what it would be if vegans were non-vegans because by definition we would be contributing to the demand of non-vegan products.

@moshtodon@mastodon.social >Growing soy crops to feed cows and taking away the dairy from them is way more insustituible than just drinking soy milk. almont no soy goes to cattle at all. the vast majority of soy is pressed for oil for human use and what is fed to animals is mostly the industrial waste from that process. and ,again, very little goes to cattle: most goes to poultry and pork.

@bigMouthCommie@fe.disroot.org oh, you may want to check the Amazon forest: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2019/jul/02/revealed-amazon-deforestation-driven-global-greed-meat-brazil But even if, this is just an example of how insustituible it is: it requires way more resources (see Our World In Data or https://www.nature.com/articles/s43016-023-00768-z) we can use this land for better agriculture and using less land and water.

@bigMouthCommie@fe.disroot.org I'm guessing this is what you're referring when you say "what i said was correct": almost no soy goes to cattle at all. What OWID says: "More than three-quarters (77%) of global soy is fed to livestock for meat and dairy production." [...] "This is now 350 million tonnes."

@moshtodon@mastodon.social if you see the chart, almost 20% of all soy ends up as oil, but a soybean is only about 20% oil. that means almost all soybeans are pressed for oil. (85% or so). the waste from pressing beans for oil is called "soy meal" or "soy cake" and you can se that it's almost all of what is fed to livestock.

@bigMouthCommie@fe.disroot.org which chart? I don't know where are you getting this 20% from. From what you're saying, I'm guessing you refer to "One-fifth of the world’s soy is used for direct (i.e. not from meat and dairy) human consumption. Most of this is first processed into soybean oil." But that's only a 13,2% of the global soy production. There is no possible way that only the leftover from human food (20%) is used for animal feed (76%).

@moshtodon@mastodon.social another 4% is oil at the bottom bringing the amount of oil to 17.2%. in order for 17.2% of the worlds soybean crop to become oil, 85% of the worlds soybeans need to be put through an oil press. the byproduct of that process is most of what is fed to animals. you can see it is labeled "soy cake" in that chart.

@bigMouthCommie@fe.disroot.org it doesn't make the current system sustainable, as scientists keep saying (including OWID and the IPCC). We could use these soy meal or cakes as fertilizer or biofuel. Instead of as fuel for the exploitation of animals on deforested land, which produce greenhouse gases of their own as well. We can make a future that encompasses animal rights, preserving the environment, and overall food efficiency.

@bigMouthCommie@fe.disroot.org this is like saying: There's people who only buy motorcycles, and will never buy cars. The car industry is growing. Therefore the people who only buys motorcycles don't have an impact on the cars industry. Well... if they wouldn't have the believe or they had the chance to buy cars, they would. All by definition.
