L.A. mayor announces relief for skyrocketing L.A. utility bills City of LA folks are lucky they have a municipal utility. Those who are stuck with for-profit private utilities can't just complain to the mayor. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDaU95UEyRI #LosAngeles #Energy #Water

RE: https://newsie.social/@ProPublica/117491517703759335 The thing about going after "welfare cheats" or "disability cheats" is that cheaters are by definition CHEATS. But instead the rhetoric of cheating is used to go after poor and/or disabled people and the actual cheats (usually abled) get off scot-free. In this case, actual organized crime.

Via Biking in LA blog Re the Streets for All 2026 endorsements: "I’d add to that list Colin Hernandez, who is running against incumbent Rick Zbur for California 51st State Assembly District. Zbur supported the recent bill making it nearly impossible to improve safety on Forest Lawn Drive. And I’m told he’s been working behind the scenes to halt the bike lanes planned for Fountain Ave in West Hollywood." Via Biking in LA blog: "I’d add to that list Colin Hernandez,...

My Dad Died by Suicide. He Left Me With 694 Video Diaries to Explain Why | NYT Opinion There are at least two types of ableism here: systemic ableism, and internalized ableism. And ableism is entwined with capitalism, toxic masculinity, and other oppressive systems, so it's a Gordian knot of these things, not simple to tease apart into separate bits. I think this is worth watching, especially for abled people. Because the time to fight ableism is NOW. If you become disabled, it doesn...

Newly disabled people are likely to resist using equipment that could ethically meet their access needs. Don't do it! Disabled people do not just suffer #ableism from the outside - many of us have internalized the oppressive system known as ableism and apply it to ourselves. This is especially true of people who were not born disabled, but became disabled later. The later you became disabled, the longer you likely lived fully enveloped in an ableist way of thinking with no internal evidence...

""For us, it's not a huge lift to just be mindful when we're trying to build trail or improve trail to think about the adaptive rider," said Angus McCusker, the Velomont trail director with the nonprofit Vermont Huts and Trails. McCusker is referring to the growing number of disabled athletes who mountain bike with specially designed equipment. "The challenge," said McCusker, "is we're connecting to existing trail networks that were never intended for...

It's Disability Pride Month. Although we'd write it differently today because our thought has moved on since Fall 2019, read & share The UC Access Now Demandifesto to get a sense of what we could and should be demanding of higher education, especially higher education. It's been plagiarized in one journal article and cited in 3 other scholarly works so far, and many disabled students, staff, and faculty have let UC Access Now know verbally and in writing how influential & a...

"Imagine a global political summit that shapes the future of our planet where one of the most populated countries in the world does not have a voice? This may seem unlikely, but currently 1.3 billion disabled people (nearly the population of China) do not have formal representation at policy talks held by the UN’s climate change body. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) hosts negotiations to limit global greenhouse gas emissions and address climate change. Ye...

:boost_requested: 🧵 I started UC Access Now in 2019/2020. I had been physically disabled for 25 years by that point. And my own public university was hurting my health while disobeying federal & state disability law. I figured if I had to fight this hard to get the bare minimum (while also dealing with grad school that's hard even for abled ppl), I wanted it fixed for everyone & wanted to work with other disabled students, staff, and faculty to do so. I did not have a deep backgr...

The design of rationing accessibility & policing disabled people has the advantage for systemic ableism of blaming disabled people for any abled people who lie to appropriate the rationed accessibility. It keeps disabled people in a scapegoat position. The right wing anti-education media recently published op-eds complaining about students who get "accommodations" for learning disabilities. As usual, the general media bites at the bait and now anti-ableists are having...
