Last week I went back to a small wood on a hill in the Chilterns, in heavy rain. It was not turning all at once. The side the prevailing winds come from had turned the most, the moisture swept up off it, while the opposite side was still very green. I was so taken up with a couple of frames that I did not notice how soaked my legs had got, until a windswept, rain-soaked walker came past. https://www.timsmalley.co.uk/blog/waiting-for-autumn-in-the-woods/?utm_source=mastodon&utm_medium=social...

Fog is incredible, but it is not the only condition worth heading to the woods for. Mist is far more common at this time of year, and a misty morning can create dramatic light. Rain is often my favourite. And a flat, overcast morning gives you steady light the whole day through. There is no need to wait only for fog. https://www.timsmalley.co.uk/blog/how-to-photograph-woodland-in-autumn/?utm_source=mastodon&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=how-to-photograph-woodland-in-autumn #woodlandph...

It has been a while, longer than I expected. I became very ill a couple of years ago and the road back has been slow. Recovery is not a straight line. It is a series of winters. 2024 was the hardest. Last winter was better. My hope is this one is better again. The practice has kept its shape through all of it, and I am back out in the woods. I write about this in more depth in my weekly letters, Serenity in the Woods: https://pages.timsmalley.co.uk #introduction #photography #trees #woodla...

Have you ever seen an oak tree dance? Britain is full of 'lost' rainforests, predominantly in the southwest and northwest of England, western/northwestern parts of Wales and the west coast of Scotland. There are other areas where the conditions are perfect too, like this one in the Peak District National Park. When the rain starts and the cloud base drops into the rainforest, the trees come alive. Everywhere you look, there is magic and mystery. #photography #woodland #trees #...
