Look at the sheer quantity of litter picked up this morning by the Ladybarn Litterpickers. Yes it’s Halloween weekend, but it’s just bats. 🦇 My colleague Cllr Beth Hartness and I talked about changing behaviour, more public receptacles, and making businesses take their share of responsibility. 🚮

Back home from Brighton. I am not happy about the Zionism is Racism motion. I voted for the amendments that would have made it a little more palatable, and voted against the overall motion. I think it’s divisive, a distraction, and goes down like a bag of sick with our Jewish members and communities. I’m a believer in self determination. I’ve said publicly in the past that imposing a one-state or two-state plan is none of our business.

Apart from ZiR I had a great time in Brighton at the Green Party Conference. I spoke against an amendment to our transport policy which would have seen us supporting minimum speed limits, which fell 🙌💚 Saw @pluralistic speak at a fringe, (on how we can and must extricate ourselves from big tech) which was something I’ve been wanting to happen for years. And had many many joyous conversations about how we really can end inequality and save the planet.

Govt: It’s ok, we can do one bad thing because we are probably not going to do the other bad thing. Ever feel you’re being gaslit? #jackdaw #rosebank

While we are on the topic of gas, I was in a scrutiny committee the other week talking about Manchester’s Heat and Power network, which is more-or-less a massive gas boiler next to the GMEX. Guess what: it physically *can’t* meet the current CO2 targets. And neither can the plan to fudge it. I asked what it would take to be truly ambitious, and get it to zero… because that’s what we must do. And the answer: it’s possible but it will take a second site, and lots of money.

One of my big bosses was asking me why I don’t use AI (cough LLMs) to write code. He started an analogy that he’s a restaurant owner and has hired me as the head chef… At which point I stopped him and said it’s like he’s saying we must produce world-class food but he’s telling us we must microwave everything, because it makes stuff hot quicker. Welcome to Wetherspoons. May have even sunk in.

In planning committee on Thursday, we said NO to this tower next to the Marble Arch. I didn’t get a quote this time, but I spoke about how the original plan for this spot was as a public square, and that seems to have been forgotten. https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/plan-huge-city-centre-tower-34804047

I used to live just off Oldham Road in Ancoats, and it’s such a wall of tarmac. There’s some proposed walking and cycling improvements and they do look mostly very good. Have a read of what Walk Ride GM are saying about it, and local people please respond to the consultation if you can. 🙏 https://www.walkridegm.org.uk/2026/03/24/speak-up-for-the-fantastic-oldham-road-scheme/

Here’s a map of road deaths in Manchester from 2020-2024… every single one an unacceptable loss of human life. And preventable. The council and mayor may have adopted a “Vision Zero” strategy, but it actually needs implementing. Otherwise it’s just nice words and continuing death and injury.

In unsung election campaigning stories, this laser printer has done 11,544 sheets of paper over the course of the Gorton And Denton by-election for Hannah and the Green Party. And it has been _mostly_ fine. So I’ve bought it an additional paper tray, as a treat, because the local elections are coming. 💚

It’s a beautiful thing to see Vote Green posters popping up on people’s windows *outside* Gorton and Denton. Because yes, we do have local elections in May (ours were not cancelled/un-cancelled)
