@chanele @imstilljeremy @statsjew @baruch@babka.social this is exactly my concern; to have these principles distorted and then assigned back to us. Going back to Yinglish, to “schmooze” in English means to socialize in a shallow, self-serving way with ulterior motives. But when Jews “schmooze” it’s more of a nice social thing and doesn’t carry the same connotations. Now imagine if Tikkun Olam is not only watered down, but distorted in such a way?

@ehenak@mastodon.coffee Nobody told you about the Jewish handshake?

    Anyone else from #EastOakland?

@ehenak@mastodon.coffee I was joking about the handshake. If I see someone using Jewish concepts with no clear indicator, I generally assume they’re Jewish. High-profile people with 10 self-ID words in their bio (“husband, democrat, activist, lawyer, author, blahablahblah”) and nothing about being Jewish are probably not Jewish. That’s what I meant by people not self-ID’ing as Jewish. People who don’t have a bio, I’d generally assume they’re Jewish if they’re talking about Jewish things.

During the rain and flooding, I checked my local Bay Area server hoping to see posts about the unfolding disaster. It was all random unrelated stuff. It felt weird and made me wonder if I’m on the right server. The point of a local server for me is local community, mutual aid, spreading important local info, etc. Most of that was still happening on Twitter despite it being even more of a mess every day.

@EverydayMoggie I saw people posting random stuff like TV and national politics and restaurants and stuff. Nothing about the storms or how they were affecting people.

My kid has been insisting for at least a month now that we have a third cat, that this cat is named “Dinner”, and that the reason I haven’t seen said cat is because “she’s very shy.”

One of the things all the people posting screenshots “proving” that LLMs can reason forget to consider is that the hypothetical objects being reasoned about have never been experienced by the models they are testing. What could a sentence like “The cup is tipped over and the penny falls out” possibly mean to something that has never seen a cup or a penny? Words describe things. LLMs can’t recognize or understand “things” because they have never experienced “things.” 1/2
