Just added a small feature in Catodon, which might not sound that important but it's a quality of life improvement that I think Sharkey and Misskey admins will appreciate: You can now set "Alt names" for custom emoji - other names that still work, even if they are not advertised as the specific emoji's name. This helps a lot when you want to rename or delete an emoji, but you know that past posts on your server will now look like :abandonedEmojiName:. Now, when you rename a c...

Catodon blog URL and other questions Today, the URL of your standalone blog page in Catodon is using this structure: https://catodon.rocks/@catodon/blog , so /@user/blog. Would this be a reason for you to not host your blog on a Catodon server? Is a domain.com/customblogname URL better? Would this be good enough, or is a URL structured like customblogname.domain.com a prerequisite for your blog? In general, which are, for you, the things that the platform that hosts your blog must absolutely...

We've seen quite a few foreign accounts signing up at electricrequiem.com lately, I suppose to try Catodon, since it's the biggest server showing up on FediDB. But it's a greek-speaking community server - please use catodon.rocks if you want to try Catodon (and, even better, set up your own server if you like it and if you know how to do it!) #catodon

Calling any Tumblr users - there was a topic on Reddit where someone was complaining that you can't reblog whole conversations on fedi. I have not used Tumblr so I don't have direct experience with the feature, but would a button that expands the full conversation above a repost or a quoted post (or any post with ancestors actually) be something that you might find useful? #tumblr

Catodon recently implemented Mobilizon/Gancio events, but users on Mastodon or other platforms see events as posts that they can't interract with. This makes events on fedi far less useful. We're gonna change that - we'll create an events.bot account that users from other platforms will be able to send a DM to, and respond to an event (Attend/Deny) via the bot. This way, anyone on fedi will be able to attend an event originally published in Catodon. #catodon #mobilizon #gancio

I've said it again, Mastodon is (finally) taking a truly user-friendly direction, and that can only be good. Not just for Mastodon, but for the whole Fediverse ecosystem. RE: https://mastodon.social/users/Mastodon/statuses/117466983307949301

Introducing the Threadiverse Catalog Cross-posted from !fediverse@piefed.social I'm the maintainer of Catodon, which offers both microblogging and forums (Lemmy-compatible communities), and we noticed that discoverability is not the threadiverse's strongest point: Our server only showed forums/communities that it "knew" because someone from the server already followed them. In Reddit it's easy to see if there is a community for a subject you care about; on the Fediverse...

@Linux@catodon.rocks do you have anything to back your statement that "Gaza Verified is a scam group"? Also, Israel is conducting a genocide and has been taking land from Palestine for decades. If you believe Palestine has a right to exist, you can't be "neutral" about this, you should be condemning Israel's actions.

Short catodon development update - implementing forums was more work than I thought, so we missed the 26.4.1 release, the next release will be 26.5.0. I am out of town for a few days, I have my laptop with me but I have been busy irl so haven't had the chance to do much. I will probably resume work properly on Monday, when I'm back in Athens. Have a great weekend everyone 🥰 #catodon

New in Catodon: Added Text formatting options in the posting form, making it much easier to add bold and italic fonts, to add strikethrough over words and more! Also added Search in Bookmarks, sorting Following/Followers by server, Firefox layout fixes, and more options for DMs: you can now Archive chats, turn notifications on/off per chat, and delete all of your messages in a DM conversation at once. #catodon

Whatever your opinion about AI is, I firmly believe that we are witnessing a technological revolution of historic proportions - the only thing I can compare it to is the internet's widespread adoption around 2000. And watching how it unfolds is also interesting from a geopolitical aspect - the USA's status as the world's leading force has been damaged with Iran and its president's absurdities, and the AI race could be a decisive factor on the financial field for the world's n...

I'm super excited - I just deployed the forums feature in catodon.rocks and it seems to work, I made my first post in a Lemmy community! I definitely have a lot of work to do, but you can -cautiously!- test the feature on our server, it is live. If something serious shows up, I will revert it and try again tomorrow. But this feels awesome - the first (proper) threadiverse post from a Misskey/Sharkey fork! Let's go 🥳 #catodon #sharkey #misskey #fediverse #threadiverse RE: https://catod...

Working on threadiverse integration has been very interesting, with the design choices that have to be made to make this work properly - and it might affect the microblogging side, too: I'm thinking of adding New/Hot/Active sortings to regular timelines. The Active one could even be close to what I described as "forum view" in 2022, in one of my first recommendations on Calckey (which never got implemented)! This is a lovely procedure, it's the most creative part and I'm e...

In the months of the Firefish craze, the #1 complaint we heard from Mastodon users was "why can't I follow a hashtag in my Home feed?". So I decided to delay the release of the first stable a little, in order to implement this new feature: The ability to merge Custom feeds (Antennas) into Home. This way Catodon will have not only the ability to follow hashtags (through Custom feeds), but to also "follow" specific words or phrases.

Made some more minor changes in the RSS feeds after @sproid 's feedback, you can now see a little more information in mobile view, and the most significant change: since Bluesky has RSS for each public account, you can now follow anyone you want from Catodon, even if they haven't enabled Bridgy Fed: Just paste their profile url in the Add RSS field, optionally enable "Add to Home", and you can have their posts appearing in your Home timeline, with their profile picture and all....

One last change before the RC for 26.4.0: Catodon now handles ActivityPub Articles and Pages properly, rendering html and all, instead of turning them all into Notes and showing them as a CW with the summary as comment, which tbf was pretty ugly. I will gradually make more adjustments so that we are better aligned with ActivityPub. #catodon #sharkey #activitypub

Now that Catodon is finally rolling, I often think of the time when Firefish exploded, in 2023. There were waves of Twitter "refugees" coming for a while and, while most didn't stay, there was an enthusiasm that we're building something that will attract and welcome more and more people. Somewhere along the way, I feel that this vibe has died. And, on one hand, I know we're building something that has the foundations to be alive in the long run, and that's better than b...

Today it was mostly optimizations for the RSS feature, it should be easier on resources now, improved some ux bits here and there. The most visible change is that I changed the look of the RSS posts, especially for the Home timeline - they still look like pretty much like posts, but they are more compact, and if there are consecutive posts from the same feed, they are now folded to take up even less space. The other change I made was in the default order of timelines: Now it's Home, Accounts...

Latest from the Catodon lab: A new way to view Followers/Following, with many sorting options (for other users the options are alphabetical by name and username only, for your profile you can also sort based on when the connection was made and when each user was last active - good for cleaning up any abandoned accounts for example). And now you can also bookmark RSS posts and even users! If for any reason you need to go back to a user's profile - just bookmark it for easy access. Both featu...
