I feel like I'm a bit stuck with this revision. Time to switch palettes and go back to one of the two manuscripts I'm supposedly writing. #Writing

Digital spaces have now become a permanent part of our sex lives across age groups. Whether it's solo engagement, searching online for sexual information, or even interacting with other people in sexual ways (mostly the first two). There's the science you do to pay the bills, and there's the science you do because you're interested in it. It's nice when the two overlap (esp. as the first often takes a larger volume of your time), but they often enough won't. #AcademicChatter

New paper in the wild! Dolomite is a weird mineral, for many reasons. One of which is that most of it is old. But there is a bit of new dolomite, such as in the Abu Dhabi sabkhas, and we used those to control for the seawater signals dolomite retains. There are these repeated injuries in hadrosaur tails. There were a few theories on this, but one of them stands out. No easy way to say this: some dinosaurs were really into rough sex. Link: https://www.cell.com/iscience/fulltext/S2589-0042(25)02000-0 #dinosaurs #paleontology

These two really aren't working for me. I did something wrong early on and I just don't know how to fix it. Might just need to strip them and start from scratch. #MiniaturePainting #Nerdlings

Let's talk memes. There is a lot of conflicting literature out there on how memes interact with politics. They do contribute to information (and misinformation) propagation, and they help increase polarization. Link: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/19331681.2022.2150737 #Memes #Information

One of the things you realize when you read a lot of research is that academics like to use a lot of weird words to describe things (to sound more accurate). Current example: kids don't "hang out"; they do "offline unstructured socializing".

The JWST once again reshapes our understanding of how exoplanets might look. We used to think that rocky planets with tight orbits around their star wouldn't have any atmosphere; now we found one with. I don't particularly like to dominate conversations; I'd rather have an actual talk with other people. But, sometimes, we get on a topic, and I get going. Did that today, then realized and asked, "Why didn't anyone stop me?" They exchanged looks, and someone said, "It was interesting."

It's always weird when you search for your own name and stumble into someone else. Even more so when it's with academic papers (and it isn't as if my last name is that common). https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/jbi.70325

The stay-behind-the-lines partner is an important motivator in many military novels. But the reality is that these relationships are complicated and at times rather stressful, although they tend to be resilient. Always nice to start the day by finding an acceptance letter in the mailbox (for an academic paper; still not making any progress on getting anything else to the submission stage).

Just to illustrate how poorly designed the institute sometimes is, I need to go down a flight of stairs, out of the building, across a bridge, and up another flight of stairs, with five doors in between, just to get to the nearest restroom on the same level. No, no need to fight a troll to cross the bridge at this time. He's on his lunch break. This is a state-owned enterprise, and employees are entitled to their breaks.

The way shells grow isn't random; it's driven by a curvature-driven growth law. Which, theoretically (for the #worldbuilding crowd), means that even on another planet, shells might look the same as here, regardless of environmental conditions. Too much of this broken timeline comes down to the inability of a few adults to sit in a room to have a conversation while checking their ego at the door and remembering they're responsible for the well-being of someone other than themselves.

Do earthquakes repeat? No one can really agree on that, one way or another. Some of them seem to, we call them repeaters. How those are generated might very well depend on specific organization of rupture points on a fault. link: https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.aeb3563 #earthquakes #geology

After about twenty odd years in the field (and now working mostly at sea), my family decided it was time I finally started dressing like a geologist (I'll probably still show up to conferences in a waistcoat and a buttoned-up shirt or a Hawaiian shirt, season-dependent, but these are nice for casual days in the office) #Geology #RockPeople

I'll be very blunt about it, all countries with a coast should be openly sharing oceanographic (physical, chemical, and biological) information. Water recognizes no borders, and eventually, others are affected. #Sea #MarineMonitoring

A friend told me they like the work I do on social media and that it's mostly good stuff. I asked her why she never liked or reposted or commented on anything I put up. She shruged as said she usually doesn't do those things. Which I get, ok, but how am I supposed to know if what I post is interesting to anyone without some feedback?

With how much I post about marine science 🌊, people sometimes forget that I'm actually a geologist ⚒️ by training. But I am, and I do get excited when I get some mud to play with (and to do interesting science with). #MarineGeology #Mud

What if a rocky planet didn't have a core? That can't happen, can it? It should differentiate... well, there might be a set of circumstances under which that might happen. If it does, they're going to be a bit strange. As to how they might be weird. They might deform more due to rotation and gravitational distribution; they might have an unstable or no magnetic field, and the minerals on their surface would definitely be exotic. Somewhere in the US in the late 1940s. Military transport planner: We need something all-terrain that could also get to a ship on its own. LeTourneau Technologies: We were thinking, two-story-tall boat with wheels the size of a buggy, would that work for you?

Sea level change doesn't just flood cities, it can also move the ground under them. up and down. Rapid sea-level rise drives increased faulting, and when we look at it relative to glacial sea-level change, one can also see it.
