Can #algae challenge corn ethanol? While 40% of US corn goes to fuel, startups like #HutanBio are growing marine algae strains in coastal deserts, seeking to develop a more sustainable alternative. My first piece for @Ambrook explore whether long-awaited, potentially carbon-negative #biofuels can scale & replace fossil fuels. https://ambrook.com/offrange/sustainability/dont-sleep-on-algae

The #AIIB long suffered a transparency deficit. Now with a high-ranking #CCP insider as president, why are Western member states still silent? Greater #Tokyo accounts for less than 20% of the foreign resident population of #Japan - even though more than 30% of the country's population lives there. That means Tokyo is far LESS diverse than Japan on average.

So here's #Greenpeace, responding to a data release by the Chinese government with...nothing but praise. Zero mention of any issues related to #labor or #humanrights issues in #Chinese #cleantech exports. Very disappointing. https://www.greenpeace.org/eastasia/press/69295/greenpeace-east-asia-comment-on-chinese-government-report-showing-chinas-80-impact-on-global-electrification/

Great piece - interestingly written from a critical, mostly Chinese-focused perspective, which is rare. Doesn't include a single quote from any Indonesian workers https://grist.org/labor/indonesia-nickel-chinese-workers-energy-transition/

I criticize #Japanese companies a lot, but I do like this aspect of #Japan corporate culture - executives taking pay cuts in response to #company failures - in this case, actions by subordinates. Can you even imagine something like this in #America? https://www.japantimes.co.jp/business/2026/10/08/companies/prudential-japan-unit-execs-pay-cuts/

During an interview, a #Japanese expert noted that it was a major shock to the economy when #Sharp was acquired by a #Chinese company. Except, it wasn't Chinese. It was #taiwanese From their perspective, it didn't matter - but from my perspective, it's dramatically different. #Taiwan #Japan #China

Allergies are costing #Japan $1.6 billion a day in lost productivity & 43% of the population now suffers from severe hay fever. Read about my one-time home, #Jakarta, and how it’s transformed from the world’s most congested city into a transit success that provides nearly 90% of its residents with mass transit access. But the only way to vote against it - show up to an in-person meeting in a week on the other side of the world. Met & know many western #Japan experts who are surprisingly ignorant about #Taiwan, the country that #Japanese are most likely to travel to. Surprised to learn the same can be said about western #Taiwan and Taiwan-based #China experts - many I met haven't ever been to Japan. Doesn't apply at all to #Japanese and #Taiwanese experts at all.

Does clearing forests in places like #Papua #Indonesia, or clearing grasslands in #Cerrado #Brazil actually help create “sustainable” transport fuel? I've tested and confirmed - it's cheaper & more fun to visit #Taipei or #Seoul from #Kansai than #Tokyo. Helps that I know more people in both cities too, and both have much more vibrant international journalism & NGO communities. Kinda don't see the point in going to Tokyo anymore. If I want to travel in Japan, lots of other places I'd rather go.

What an argument. #China, which produces solar panels partly through exploitation of #Uyghurs and their homeland's natural resources, can somehow support the #green transition in a region where #Indonesia is exploiting #Papuans and their resources. Another way to put this - #Chinese cheap panels, produced via colonial exploitation, and help Indonesia further its colonial exploitation in #WestPapua How is this desirable in any way? https://www.lowyinstitute.org/the-interpreter/china-s...
