HALLELUJAH! I finally found a way to use ffmpeg to convert the quadraphonic FLAC I bought (Suzanne Ciani 30-minute live performance) into a 5.1 AC3 file and play it on my surround system. I've never heard quad before. I'm crying.

Sunrise this morning. Sky colours like this tend to last for no more than two minutes, and you have to be quick! You get more time in the winter though, since the Sun is moving at a shallower angle so the conditions take longer to change.

I just thought it looked like that transformer on the electricity pole was conducting... as well as conducting.

I've now notated my second piano solo in Dorico. It's certainly easier to use than Sibelius, though it does still have a couple of quirks that I need to get used to. I'm working towards a second volume of piano music, though I'm not sure when it will be published. The first one, by the way, is here: https://www.lulu.com/shop/mike-torr/hardy-perennials/paperback/product-gwwymp.html?page=1&pageSize=4 #piano #SheetMusic

Thinking of my dad today, two years after we lost him. Here's what I wrote at the time, and it still says it all. Missing you still, Dad. x https://miketorr.com/writer/2024/10/28/a-loose-leaf-soul/

I'm toying with the idea of getting Lord Dszira to let me post his journal entries again. He's been quite the recluse lately. In the mean time, here's a blast from the past — I particularly enjoyed this one. https://owota.blogspot.com/2019/11/you-call-that-rain.html

A random fact about me: When I used to play in a soul band in Southampton, while soloing on the organ during The Theme From Peter Gunn, I would often throw in a quote from the Alton Towers Nemesis rollercoaster music.

If anyone plays piano and would like to try the intro of my song, "Mister Micawber Said", knock yourself out! This thing is going to be a nightmare to notate, because apparently my finicky precision is way more subtle than I gave myself credit for. Look at the left-hand stride octaves changing direction! I didn't even know I was DOING that until I watched myself closely. #piano #music

Found this entry in my journal, March 2023, and it made me laugh... Me watching The Clangers the other night: - Why is Granny Clanger knitting? I don't think they wear jumpers, they just have those metal armour plate things. - Wait a minute... their skins are knitted. THEIR SKINS ARE KNITTED. GRANNY CLANGER IS A COMPLETE PSYCHO!!

I revisited my book today. 104k words of prologue written (yes, it's weird), and probably at least another 150k to go for the main story, At some point I really need to spend some time outlining what I plan to do. SO many ideas, not all compatible with each other. I need a way to triage them. It doesn't help that I have about four other non-writing projects calling on my time. That makes it all too easy to "get distracted", which is another way of saying &q...

This Kickstarter for a graphic novel about Douglas Adams looks pretty cool! I think I might get involved :) https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/room5064/share-and-enjoy-a-douglas-adams-biographical-graphic-novel #DouglasAdams

Working on my 7th piece out of 8 for my next music book, which is my song, "The Door". When I write these piano pieces I just play what seems natural. I'm still blown away by how HARD it is to notate them with all the necessary precise details. 😐

First purchase on #BandcampFriday - I've been saving this one on my wish list since I heard it. Maddie is so talented. How does she navigate those complicated melodies and vocal rhythms? It's astonishing. Amber - Maddie Ashman https://maddieashman.bandcamp.com/track/amber

I'd love to see an option in music player apps to switch between "by track" and "by album" for playlists. In album mode: * Each playable thing will be an entire album in order from start to finish. * Skipping will skip the whole album and start playing the next one. * Shuffle mode will shuffle the albums but keep the tracks in order on each album. If only this could happen! But they're not interested, are they? :(

A productive planning day and a walk around a lake. I've fixed some of the narrative structure issues by relocating some scenes as interstitial teasers. I also named the three parts, which helps to solidify their functions. Part one is finished, and is called "Parabolic Ark". It's quite hard to find names that are not spoilers, but I feel they're important. I'm the opposite of Terry Pratchett in that respect: I'm all about chapters and...
