@thwjoy I think I've reached a stationary distribution in my coding style. Present me and up to 10 years in the past me would have coded things almost identically. This helps with me being able to read my code, but it bothers me how predictable I am.

@ccanonne I try to schedule all my meetings for the same day of the week. While meetings beyond my control get onto other days, I do end up with blocks of solo research time on other days. I also am trying to learn to say no to commitments.

We are in Rochester, MN for a visit to the Mayo clinic. My childhood memory of Rochester was a field full of geese. That memory was accurate. https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/a-minnesota-towns-love-hate-relationship-with-giant-geese

@simon I either cut down my 50-min talk or slow down my 15-min talk. Both are reasonable options!

I was looking up wages for UCSD grad students for a UC faculty member. I thought I would share the link while I have it https://grad.ucsd.edu/_files/financial-support/employment-files/student-pay-rates/AY%202022-2023%20STUDENT%20ACADEMIC%20TITLE%20RATES_________%20-%20Sheet1.pdf Students are paid at 50% rate 9 months of the year, and 100% rate during summer (https://grad.ucsd.edu/financial/employment/support-eligibility.html). AFAICT, TAs are paid $2,582.95/mo, RAs: $1834-$3593/mo. Average ren...

@albertcardona @clathrin @bradkhulse @philiphubbard @srinituraga Yes, Seldon Island and the Potomac Heritage Trail are my favorite places to run near Janelia. There have been bear sightings, but rare and not near people. I don't know of anyone who is concerned, but you should do what you feel comfortable with!

@ichoran I see, like an ensemble of classifiers?

  • View post

@albertcardona @ichoran Probably not? I'm thinking of a text classifier (maybe even an image classifier! a link follower and classifier!), not based on hashtags, though poster and hashtag would be useful features for it. I'd want it to optimize over sequences of posts. Maybe it would intuit when I'm having a bad day and show me more cute animal photos? In general, ML is what you use when you can't think up a good set of rules, I think that would be the case I&...

@hue For me, I'm more looking for info about what field a student/postdoc wants to work in, what types of algorithms they want to explore, what types of problems they want to solve. I don't know the context for you totally, but I would guess they don't need something so specific?

Feeling lots of freudenfreude after watching student presentations this morning. Thanks to Janelia colleagues @ceschretter @fra_loe @boazmohar @markkitti & many more! And thanks to Germans for having a word for all the things! https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/25/well/mind/schadenfreude-freudenfreude.html

@NicoleCRust What a weird range of years for a human to predict, and be off by >> 10x. Not 5-10, but 3-8 years -- is this some kind of binary thing? Anyways, those MIT researchers didn't seem to learn from that time they tried to solve visual pattern recognition in one summer. Interesting! I do think machines can do *some* of these things now, but the holes in how useful those things were (e.g. read but not understand) are perhaps only apparent now.

@ichoran @albertcardona I agree! I use Spotify for music recommendations, and this does not seem to be a solved problem here. Last week it tried to make me listen to a Christmas song by Kurt Vile. This was very wrong. There are definitely some posters for whom I would like to read almost everything they write, unless it is Christmas music.

@trose_neuro I once dropped a caseless iPod touch off a fourth floor balcony, it got a dent but was otherwise fine!
