@ticky Inflation isn't the fundamental lie. It's scarcity. Capitalism doesn't work without it.

@xankarn Bruh, just turn on Fox News or Newsmax or any number of Youtube and TikTok channels or whatever and you'll hear the same exact shit. I don't get why people are STILL mystified by how effective propaganda is.

@john_darksoul It's the Amazon of online social spaces. Extremely useful but tyrannically, parasitically ubiquitous. The more the internet dies, the more useful Reddit becomes, and the more useful it becomes, the more the internet dies. ...to say nothing of all of its other flaws.

@baldur All they care about is feeling like what they're doing is important, novel, and/or making a difference.

@tbn97 @juliette How do you solve "bad parenting" on a societal level? IMO, social media companies are responsible because they're the ones profiting off of the harmful behavior. It should be made as unprofitable as possible (i.e. with regulation, fees, penalties, excise taxes).

@john_darksoul They're using drug dealer tactics, as always... offer it cheap, establish a dependence, and then maximize the profit margin. It doesn't matter if it's cheaper than people or not because by the time companies figure out that it isn't and won't, it'll still be cheaper than eliminating the dependence (rehiring, retraining, restructuring, etc). At some point, AI competition will die down, the ones that are left can stop investing so much...

@byte Why would a chat IM protocol need to edit or delete messages? Jut send another message.

@phire Is it me or do the pro-LLM comments feel extremely hivemind-y? "Join us or die" basically.

@azonenberg I'd go with "relative fixed point." Allow a scaling factor and an offset.

@anthropy You: "WE NEED MORE NUANCE!" Also You: "People are just trying to cancel AI because they're unreasonable and will find any reason to plug their ears and hate it." Yeah, good luck persuading people with that argument.

@anthropy You can argue anything you want, but you're still a hypocrite. I'd argue that's counterproductive for your mission. You have to be nuanced about the people you are trying to persuade. Why do you think they're so upset? I don't give a shit what you think about me. My stance on AI is too nuanced to express on social media :P. I came to Mastodon for randomly generated memes from shitpostbot, but he's dead now and I don't want to le...

@anthropy I'm not reading through all of that so sure, I'll take your word for it. No, I wouldn't call for "cancelling" everything. Yeah, I despise what LLMs have done to the internet, among many other things. But ultimately, the technology isn't the problem. It's the capitalistic influences that corrupt the situation (to put it mildly). That's what I'd cancel. So, I appreciate your point about nuance, but also, I am ups...

@hrbrmstr Hmm... 4% of public Github commits == all of software development? Something about that doesn't seem right, but I can't quite put my finger on it. 🤔

@eigenkate Do you have ADHD? This sounds very much like Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD), a symptom ~99% of people with ADHD struggle with (that's the actual estimate ADHD specialists give, not an exaggeration). I suffer with it and have lots of neurodiverse friends, and it's so obvious once you learn about it. For some stupid fucking reason, it's rarely talked about.

@Lightfighter @cR0w That's just economic selection. Next time, maybe companies should think twice before relying solely on plutocratic technology conglomerates run by literal human parasites. There's plenty of valuable lessons to be learned by everyone actually.
