  On the way home from our mountain retreat we saw a big herd of buffalo. This made us both unreasonably happy. My fondest hope for the future is that the Great Plains are repopulated with enormous free-roaming herds of bison, restoring the soil, bringing back something like the historic tallgrass ecosystem of the American West, helping to heal the biosphere, and just looking majestic. You have to dream. #climate

  The donkeys and horse let us know they are happy to see us home. And we are sure happy to be back with them. Somewhat to my surprise, Arturo (usually the more stand-off-ish) was the most solicitous of our attention. #asstodon

  It’s been a few days since the last school shooting but I only just now let my self feel it, allowed myself to break down. Grateful in a weird way that I can commit to feel the pain of it now. After Columbine, when one of my own teachers was killed by a child with a big gun, I was numb for years. No, not years. It was a quarter of a century. I did anything I could (mostly intellectualizing) to avoid experiencing that feeling. Shoved it down in a place a part of me hoped it couldn’t be found.

  After spending two years getting disentangled from big tech and AI, it has now become so prevalent in the economy that almost any participation in my industry forces me to talk with bots instead of humans. And every time it happens the AI is forcing the labor on me that the company once paid a person to do well. There’s never a resolution, just a wall you have to find a way to get through. So much worse than useless this tech is a huge middle finger.

  The burritos have had a change of heart. Instead of being irritated about having fly protection leggings put on them they have started to outright request them. I can offer only a technical alternative to a problem that is not a technical problem. At a fundamental level it’s hard not to feel that however I may protest or offer an alternative, I’m recruited against my will. The kind of economic change we need is just so fundamental.

  They donkeys like to play with big dog toys. The coyotes do too and they try to steal the donkeys’ toys during the night. If more than two coyotes get in on the heist they sometimes succeed. But usually not. Anyway, dear neighbors, that’s what the loud chorus of 1 am brays was about. #asstodon

Turns out that not polluting your home with fossil gas works 2x better than medications for treating asthma.   Something interesting I learned about donkeys yesterday: it’s very hard to get a hypodermic needle in their neck. As a vet you have exactly one chance. This is because donkeys have mobile veins! They can retract their jugular vein behind a very thick, tough sheath. They can even temporarily shut down cutaneous blood flow. This is a capability most mammals don’t have! It makes donkeys highly resistant to attacks by predators and gives them special ability to function at high elevations.

  Australia is introducing free daytime power in July. They’ve installed so much #solar that the challenge is to use it effectively. People who can shift their electricity usage to the day (think retirees or people that work from home) can save a lot even if they don’t have solar. Anyone with a battery or two installed could see their power bill for many months go to almost zero.
