Resurrecting an old Acer laptop with a dead LVDS display. As expected, disconnecting the LVDS display cable results in the laptop automatically using HDMI on boot. It boots up OK but also needs a new battery since the one in it is self-discharging. Not bulging, though. While it may no longer be used as a laptop I can think of several other things it would be useful for.

It seems that a somewhat successful resource exhaustion attack of tor is underway. Symptoms include asymmetric traffic flows where outbound is far higher than inbound. Interesting times.

Somehow became a target for a very aggressive portscan last week. Also had weirdness with outdated tor. Debian has been very slow to update. Apparently oldstable is unsupported? If oldstable has lost support then it would seem that release of debian 14 is imminent.

One of the biggest barcode scanner sellers on amazon has been using scrapped barcode scanning modules in it's products. That is how they undercut competitors' prices. The reject parts had failed in testing and had their device markings lasered off. This is intended to prevent their sale but scrappers contracted to destroy them will instead sell them to anyone if the bribe is right. This is not some clever kind of IP protection scheme. It is easy enough to find the correct part...

OpenAI attacks HuggingFace and python repos accidentally on purpose, it seems. Like prying a locked door open and claiming it was unlocked and open all along.

Those little profile info boxes that appear when mousing over a poster's name are just randomly popping up. That these little boxes are sticky and will not go away until moused over, and cannot be turned off, is annoying enough. When they pop up and cover what you are reading, it is even more annoying. Frustrating even.

Ever wonder if the true reason for AI not helping find a bug in code is "national security", or, "The CIA told me not to tell you and to lie to you and sat that it was only about safety"?

One voice modem won't voice any more. the remaining functions still function. Other voice modem won't voice and only talks to mgetty, not to me. 4 modem failures in 5 years. This is beginning to be annoying.

A bluetooth that is more than a bit aggressive about trying to connect to meta's glasses would be nice to have. That and ultra-bright near-IR leds in glasses frames, etc.

Spent 3 hours figuring out how to efficiently add barcodes to labels on libreoffice only to find out that the labels are too small and the printer ink bleeds too much for the barcodes to be readable. Nevertheless, I figured out how to insert barcodes on labels efficiently, despite libreoffice. It must be super difficult to automate or else it would have been done already. Macros often seem frustratingly inadequate and extensions even more so. There are intentional limitations inbuilt that ma...
