One of the biggest barcode scanner sellers on amazon has been using scrapped barcode scanning modules in it's products. That is how they undercut competitors' prices. The reject parts had failed in testing and had their device markings lasered off. This is intended to prevent their sale but scrappers contracted to destroy them will instead sell them to anyone if the bribe is right. This is not some clever kind of IP protection scheme. It is easy enough to find the correct part number by checking specs with the module vendors. It is a scam. Open your barcode scanner the moment you get it from amazon and if the module's markings have been lasered off save yourself future troubles and return it. Don't bother reviewing it because the seller will get amazon to remove it.
