I like how LinkedIn is a company with 20 billion in revenue, over 18 thousand employees, owned by the mega-giant Microsoft, and yet they still send me emails like "You appeared in 1 searches this week"

I'm currently the only one of 3 disabled trans people in my household who can work, but 16 months of being bedridden and chronic migraines have left us very broke, and we're helping my sister move cross-country now. If you can send a few dollars, that'd be very appreciated! https://ko-fi.com/fooneturing

so what has broken the internet today? 1. php 2. node.js 3. gitlab 4. 4 5. musl 6. QUIC/HTTP/3 7. Signal 8. Apache Traffic Server 9. Pillow for Python, even! 10. bind 11. LiteLLM 12. XZ Utils 13. Bind (Java is reported, but supposedly it's just their version of the 4 issue) anything else I'm missing? and apparently Railray (a cloud provider?) got hacked and are telling all their customers to rotate their secrets. Apparently things like API keys were stolen

I've been saying since the 2000s that it's important that every big software stack have at least one angry new software grad to fight back against entrenched complexity in the existing codebase. sometimes there is a good reason why we can't "just do X, Y, or Z" but someone should be still raising the question, damn it

It's always slightly annoying to me when there's keyboards that can switch between bluetooth and a separate proprietary protocol, because they always run into the problem of what to name that separate option. * RF - Ah, so their Bluetooth isn't going over radio now? * 2.4g - hey quick question: what frequency is that Bluetooth running at?

I have one dual-socket USB charger, two USB-C cables, and two phones. if I connect cable 1 to phone 1 and cable 2 to phone 2, only phone 1 charges. but if I connect cable 1 to phone 2, cable 2 to phone 1, both phones charge.

anyone remember back in the 90s before google when search engines were just dogshit and it was really hard to find anything, and what search engines there were would sometimes just give you completely unrelated pages full of gibberish? man, that was a terrible time for the web

arg. I think my nice portable container just failed to work because I ran it with insufficient levels of nice portable containerization. no, you need to run linux inside linux inside linux inside linux, not just linus inside linux inside linux, that'll never work

I wonder if anyone has examined code reviewer performance with regard to perceived AI usage. like if you stick "co-authored by chat-gpt/claude" and some em-dashes in a merge request, do code reviewers miss more bugs because they're not reading as closely? or do they become more picky, complaining about things they wouldn't otherwise?

what the fuck windows midway through a call, my bluetooth microphone stops sending sound, so I give up and switch to a pair of headphones with a builtin mic and they won't work so I reboot and they don't work, so I make windows forget, and re-pair them now they pair, but they don't show up as an output or an input but they are connected just not as an audio output or input

Anyone happen to have ROM dumps of a IBM Wheelwriter 3500 (or one, and the ability to dump them)? I'm helping someone repair one that has some corrosion damage on the main motherboard, and it looks like the eeproms may be lost.

ugh. I'm having to go through THREE versions of Microsoft Office just to find the proper WordArt I want. Office 4.x doesn't have it, and neither does Office 95, although Office95 seems to know what WordArt is? (It's in the help, even if I can't seem to create it)

wow xfinity's site is terrible. I'm trying to convince it to let me cancel my TV plan but keep my internet. I got through two chatbots and it gives me the option to schedule a callback. I hit that button and it says there's an error, and suggest I go look at support. like, support for their website? not working?

I love when banks require you to do extra security/2fa on specific actions (like sending money), but they're the same 2fa you have to do to log in. so I enter my username/password, it sends an SMS to my phone, I enter the code, I click into "send money", select my landlord, type in the amount, click send, and it sends a code to my phone, I type it in again. the two texts came in 30 seconds apart. why are you re-authorizing me less than a minute later?

look there's a billion other reasons why people are against AI and all but fundamentally the core of my person reason is that I've already spent 30 years learning how to teach computers how to do exactly what I tell them to, so I am exceptionally disinterested in having them do things less accurately by talking to them in a sloppier language
