Unsolicited opinion: When people in workplaces, and notably in politics, present ‘loyalty’ as a cardinal virtue, it signals a lack of actual, defensible merit. “He’s a loyal foot-soldier” as a justification for a promotion has all the integrity and objectivity of “he’s my nephew”. And very often what looks like loyalty is just that literally nobody else would make this twerp a better offer to tempt them away.

#WeekendSewingClub latest… Here’s the houndstooth Italian wool wrap dress, as near finished as it needs to be today. I will absolutely wear this. A couple of details I’m pleased with: The tie opening on the side seam is reinforced inside with a scrap of leather - invisible on the outside. The hems are kind of low-rent for the fancy fabric: just overlocked and turned in: quite visible (though colour-matched). More importantly, it keeps that curved edge, and especially the flounce nice &am...

I’m not so fragile that I can’t admit when I’m wrong… When Darren Jones said there were “good reasons” not to disclose the Mandelson files, I thought “Sure thing, dude… because it’ll make yous look like a bunch of unscrupulous bastards.” Actually, as far as I can it’s mostly making them look like a bunch of hapless twats who all despise each other as much as the rest of us.

It’s conference week. I haven’t planned what I’m going to pack. So in the meantime I’m wearing the clothes I’m LEAST likely to want to wear in public. Today I’m in my rattiest old gym leggings, woolly slippers and a rather glamorous silk t-shirt. It’s a look!

Darren Jones 2 weeks ago: “there are very good reasons not to release all the Mandelson files…” Sure thing, fella. Here they come! https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2026/jun/04/starmer-darren-jones-peter-mandelson-us-ambassador-texts

#WeekendSewingClub It’s the oversized blazer, done except for the front fastening. I just need to summon the energy to go out and find a suitable button. Super pleased with this as my first start-to-finish garment of 2024, and an eminently wearable one. #sewing #tailoring #maker #iMadeItMyself #itHasPockets

Woke up convinced it was Saturday. Currently at the ‘bargaining’ stage of grief. Seriously though… can it at least be Wednesday? Would it really hurt anyone? Is it too much to ask?

Well, it’s taken me 6 months, but I’ve finally put in a complaint to the National Conciliation Service about the AA abandoning me on a motorway embankment for 6 hours in the cold and rain. Starting my May Day weekend early to celebrate. #WorkersOfTheWorld slack off for a change! ✊

Spotted in a book review: “Strong on why large organisations are dysfunctional, vague on the alternative.” Errr… the obvious alternative is smaller organisations.

Drat… I was hoping the man arrested for selling Morgan McSweeney’s phone might transpire to be Morgan McSweeney. That does not appear to be the story.

I don’t know where to put myself with this stupid argument… On the one hand, Ofcom - £20B fines? Full marks for audacity, but there’s not a one of us believes you’d ever make that happen. On the other hand, Meta - the fines don’t matter if you intend to not break the rules OR… Do feel free to fuck away off 👋 https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2026/may/07/meta-sues-ofcom-over-fines-regime-for-breaches-of-online-safety-act

#WeekendSewingClub holiday special… this is the face of a woman thinking “fuck you I won”. I jettisoned the coat I started last week (energy too scarce to waste on a project that doesn’t excite me), and redirected attention to the water-resistant, bonded houndstooth wool, but with a ‘simple’ cape pattern (new look, N6768). It was like sewing a tarpaulin. Should have been doable in two days, but took 5. My hands are TRASHED. I love the result. #sewing #tailoring #iMadeItMyself #ItHasPockets

Good morning, hunter fren! You know you’re doing gardening* right when the apex predators put you on their regular circuit. *My approach to ‘gardening’ is to plant a bunch of native trees for structure and height, then leave it the fuck alone for the local ecosystem to adopt. Oh, and one woolly tyrant to scare the bejeezus out of the neighbourhood cats.
