kinda amazing to see lots of homebrew games for retro consoles, like the atari vcs / 2600. i learned how to program assembly in 2017 by going on the atariage forums. but i see people, completely unrelated and unorganised into any kind of forum of community that i recognise, coming up with amazing games and software all the time. not sure what to take away from all of this, but i hope somehow that all #retrocomputing people come into contact in some way and share their spark of joy for this.

i am a socialist activist in my meatspace life. i know a lot about holding banners, setting up little street stalls to talk to people in the street, sell newspapers and give out flyers... going to rallies... my fellow comrade here on the fediverse is: @sam_wainwright please say hi and give him a follow. i am trying to introduce more people in my activist scene to the fediverse. https://socialist-alliance.org/ #activism #socialism #protest #solarpunk #ecology #ecosocialism

Should really get around to making an update post on the permacomputer project on the retrocomputing forum...

Also starting the process of organising all my electronic equipment and components. I have thousands upon thousands of some of these things. Kinda shocking to me that so much of my kit has been floating around parts of the house, it makes it very difficult to find things sometimes. Found the very interesting CH32V103 board, and I think I have managed to collect all my raspi Pico's in one place now too. They are AUD$9.00 locally, the picos. That's difficult to beat...

not sure if anyone remembers the video production group "loading ready run", but i feel the music video "three PS3s" could easily be updated to: <large number> microcontrollers yes, i do indeed have that many. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8sjhjFOw4Ok

Been thinking about the people's permacomputer, a little instant-on BASIC computer that I want to build for educational purposes. I have so far been targeting Atmel AVR chips not unlike those inside classic Arduino boards. I also have a few raspberry pi picos on hand, and I am wondering whether they would be better suited for the purpose. They are, critically, quite cheap compared to a whole AVR setup. They're 3.3V, compared to an Arduino with 5V, so perhaps back to the drawin...

Thinking about the people's permacomputer project, as always. Perhaps it is time to do a broader exploration of the different microcontrollers on offer today, instead of continuing down the AVR path without doing any further checks. It is very important to the project that the hardware that it ends up developing for a BASIC computer is as inexpensive as possible. Displays and keyboards are about as expensive as the MCU. This is a problem. Some sort of conspectus would be good at this...

Activism is actually about behind the scenes work. The Lula victory makes me think of all the organisers who must have worked their arses off to get this idea across the line. Activism is not just the rally, it is also everything before and after. Think of the activists and organisers in these next few days, who are doing their best every day. We take a lot for granted here in Australia, where voting is compulsory. Please get out and vote. #activism #socialism #lula #brasil #brazil

been playing a lot of stellaris lately. makes me think i could make a stellaris de-make in Tiny BASIC. obviously STARTREK.BAS is informative. - whole galaxy screen - solar system screen - planet screen - transit screen ? i think the idea will be that you are one ship exploring the galaxy, more than setting up an empire with borders. - civilisation name generator needed - planet/star name generator needed #retrocomputing #basic #retrogaming

Thinking about scrapping this latest attempt at a BASIC interpreter, and sitting down and having a think about what a nice BASIC would require for my purposes. Array variables. Some nice string operations, such as INSTR() and LEFT$ etc. I am getting stuck on following crabbed code from the 1970s. I have 8K of SRAM, a large complement of registers, and enormous amount of flash memory--256KB. The Arduino mega is quite beefy.

commodore 64 BASIC is an abomination, so many secret codes for doing things. for instance, it lacks a CLS command, and you must just know PRINT CHR$(147)... i want to find a popular platform for releasing BASIC code that is not the commodore 64 -- any suggestions? i was thinking the zx spectrum? something sinclair maybe? perhaps we are just stuck with the c64, though, its popularity is pretty overwhelming. #tinybasic #commodore64 #basic #retrocomputing

Discrete transistor computer dev log Right at the end of finishing all the gates for a D flip flop, I made an error, and in an attempt to fix it, I ended up lifting a track off the veroboard and ended up ruining the whole thing :( Having a think about what to do now. Perhaps making these little flip flop boards is going to be similar to real semiconductor fabbing -- I should expect some level of failure, and have 'inactive cores' on every board.

Not quite sure, but I think I have stumbled on perhaps the next phase of the people's permacomputer project. Consider: a modular discrete transistor computer system/platform. Diode transistor logic. This I am making out of 2N3904 bipolar junction transistors, and signal diodes. Not much is different about the computer compared to a modern one, other than it is made by hand out of discrete components, instead of being printed on a wafer. #Permacomputing #retrocomputing

Is there another CPU with something like the 6502's zero page RAM? On the 6502, the first page of RAM can be accessed much faster than the rest. You have the ability to make many many virtual registers in RAM at only the cost of a couple clock cycles.

constantly scratching my head about what to do about this tech collapse, sometimes. perhaps less is more, and, importantly, i shouldn't try and force technical solutions onto what are in essence social problems. but i do like a challenge. everything is expensive. the web has gone to shit. Trying as hard as I can to try and source hardware and software with a view to what is easily available in my region. Too often these retrocomputing hobbies will depend on components only obtainable from the USA or parts of Europe. I have been interacting with different types of Asian businesses for ordering things and getting supplies. I have learned a lot. #retrocomputing
