EDIT: It seems I got things wrong here. I'm sorry about that. I'm sorry for spreading misinfo here, and relieved to hear there wasn't a ToS change. https://mastodon.art/@waynedixon/117509748411999791 *previous message:* If you are a #blender person who has assets, code, extensions on SuperHive (formerly Hive Market), know that there was a terms of service update that gives them permission to sell your work for training to LLM companies. You can opt out, but it's hidden, and th...

In an interesting moment to watch, legally: https://www.404media.co/reverse-engineer-anything-is-the-new-wild-west-of-ai/ I'm not a fan of / don't respect vibecoding, but I *am* a fan of jailbreaking devices and *legalizing* decompiling (notably, the decompiling work that's interesting is not happening by vibecoders though). It's an interesting moment because previously corporations have been in the "we can do whatever we want because we're exploiting the commons"...

So how many FOSS orgs are choosing to not use genAI at all? Obviously I know @spritely@social.coop takes that stance, because I work there. But who else? Godot, maybe? (They played with it for a bit then enacted a policy against it, IIRC.) The Document Foundation, though I am not sure by what degree? Zig, certainly. But who else? The room seems to be shrinking, alas :\

There are no instances in ActivityPub either. There's only actors. The instance'ification came outside of the work on the spec, though it did start with the particular shape of how sharedInbox was defined. I wish I had pushed harder for sharedInbox to retain the actor-like properties I believed were important, rather than the implicit-routing that Mastodon pushed for. My biggest regret. Nonetheless, even then, there's still no "instance" in AP, in terms of the spec. In te...

Huge news! End-to-end-encrypted relays (via the Noise protocol) comes to Spritely Goblins and OCapN! https://spritely.institute/news/end-to-end-encrypted-relays-for-ocapn.html Relays are federated (there is no "official relay", you can easily run your own) but also oblivious, and merely manage routing encrypted messages. A big milestone! #spritely #ocapn #goblins #guile

We now note that that we do not waive our attribution requirements for Spritely Goblins, which are present in Apache v2 (and for that matter, CC BY, CC BY-SA, and most FOSS licenses) https://codeberg.org/spritely/goblins/pulls/998/files So if you train on our codebase, you have to retain attribution, which we consider the most important requirement to motivate development of technology in the commons. If, somehow, you are using a statistical soup which has no way to preserve attribution, well,...

Perhaps I could have gotten a laptop with a beefier GPU; my intel integrated GPU is *sweating* trying to render some of these scenes in Blender. But it's doing it. I kinda have this vague opinion that it's good to not have to rely on "top end" hardware, that doing so puts you in a position of building or using or advocating for tech that many people can't access

One of the top threads on the ClaudeAI subreddit right now: "I am done with this shit" https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeAI/comments/1wm5c21/i_am_done_with_this_shit/ Curious to see just how much of the thread on a quite pro-genAI subreddit is people commiserating on the exhaustion of their work turning primarily into tedium and poor engineering. Bonus in that the Claude AI summary bot in the thread says: > The Rise of the Meat Proxy: You're not an engineer anymore, you're a...

So: you started vibecoding your FOSS project? And now you don't really understand your codebase anymore *without* asking agents what's happening? And you basically outsourced all your favorite part of your passion project to managing a robot that doesn't care? And you're more burnt out than ever? I have to say that it's very difficult for me to feel sympathy for this. I see more people reporting on this, but it feels fairly predictable. But it also feels like it was clearly...

A decade ago: someone on your timeline is telling you not to be worried about advancements in AI because it was going to result in fully automated gay luxury space communism. You ask them how we are going to switch to that from capitalism by using capitalism to do it and they link you to an article about UBI. Don't worry about it, you're going to have time to work on your code and art finally Today that person is either fully disillusioned with all of it or is working at Anthropic

It's pretty simple. You're hearing "We're so scared of the AIs, we need to reign them in" from the very US companies building and selling them for two reasons: - They're about to IPO, and it's amazing marketing for them - They want a regulatory moat, since they're deeply worried about the open weight LLMs. They want everyone dependent on this tech and to be *the only ones legally permitted to dispense it*.
