I just downloaded bIRC from the app store. I haven't used IRC in so many years. Decades, really. So I joined IRCNet, and created a channel called #appdotnet. Literally nothing happening there, but if anyone cares to pop in and say hi, if I'm at my computer when you join, I'll say hi back...

Here's your monthly reminder to check out Xcode Cloud if you haven't already. Paid dev accounts get 25 hours per month of compute time. My project isn't huge or anything, but over the last two weeks, I've pushed 11 builds for a grand total of 32 minutes of compute time. And it's especially helpful during beta season: Xcode 26 doesn't run on Golden Gate beta, so without Xcode cloud, I didn't have a way of making a build I could put in the s...

Ok. Maybe I’m just slow. But in the show, Silo, it seems like the protocol-enforcing computer is repeatedly saying the following: 1: If you don’t do what I say, the silo will destroy itself through violence. 2: To prevent that from happening, I will kill everyone in the silo. So do what I say. Am I wrong? Do the “safeguards” make sense to you? If so, please explain it to me like I’m five. #AppleTv #silo #dystopianfuture

The problem with Blanche saying, "Sure, sure, the 'weaponization fund' is dead, go ahead and confirm me!" is that he lies about everything. Once the Senate confirms him, what stops him from just going ahead with plan 'a'?

Rewatching Desperately Seeking Susan for the first time since I saw it, when it first came out in theaters. And once again, I was pleased and surprised to see a young Giancarlo Esposito in a brief but impactful scene early in the flick. So cool.

I was just trying to play a word game, and it rejected the word "oodle". Like, the word "oodles" is real, but apparently, you can't have one "oodle". Any other words like that? Like you can have a fence, but not one fent?

Holy shit, one of my oldest friends--same age as me, but we've been friends since Carter was president--just made a video for a song he released last year. And the song's pretty compelling on its own, but the video takes it to another level. Please check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rbep-RxiRA

For the most part, at work, I'm responsible for documentation and training. However, that puts me in a good place to make promotional videos, and we've just released my latest. I have to admit that I'm biased, but I think it came out pretty well. https://youtu.be/pwVL3V-0BuE

Ugh. Not a great email to receive from one's elderly parents: "We really like the Toyota Prius for its excellent fuel economy, but they definitely don’t hold up well under impact."

TFW your elderly father sends you an email that's richtig funny, but is just a lightweight-jokey way of saying that something terrible has happened.

With all the talk about The Odyssey, it's worth remembering that Christopher Nolan's early masterpiece, "Memento", presaged how AI works with context tokens, and how that can be manipulated.

I used em-dashes—lots of them!!—before AI made them uncool.

Color me naive, but the change of language from "soldiers" to "war-fighters" by this administration as sad for the future as it makes me angry for the present.

I remember the day I realized that, at light speed, time dilation is infinite, so when a photon extinguishes on my retina as I'm looking at the Andromeda galaxy, I know that it traveled 2.5 million years to get here, but from its own perspective, literally no time has passed. For some reason, I was filled with intense sadness at that realization. That was the same sadness that I felt when Hodor finally realized the sole purpose of his life, determined in the past by then-future events.

I’ve not yet seen the Odyssey. The dialog, I hear, is mostly modern. How, then is the me- ter? Full of iambs, I hope, in groups of six? Or no? Of those who follow me, I ask: the script, pray tell, is it in epic verse?

I was listening to someone talk about what sounded dangerously close to an emotional connection to their AI assistant, and I couldn't help but think of that song from the 80s by The Tubes, "She's a Beauty". Watching the video again and listening to the lyrics, it's actually a really good parable for the AI age. The video captures even more applicable problematic elements than are apparent in the lyrics. https://youtu.be/mQ_k_VG6Syc

OK, for fans of the movie #TENET (and I realize I may be sort of alone on this one), I had a realization on my last watch. At the end (SPOILERS!), our protagonist, as he is learning details about his future, he's becoming more and more agitated, almost in tears, and other than sheer overwhelm, I couldn't quite reconcile that. But the thing is, he'd taken so much else in stride, I didn't think it was sheer overwhelm. 1/?

The answer, I think, is that there are lots and lots of people involved, half of whom are coming from the future, having clearly been trained in the future. In fact, even the cohort who are going forwards in time must have been trained for the operation in the future and sent back to the past to participate forward. There is just one person missing from this operation: It's mastermind. Him. The protagonist. 3/?

Argh. My tummy is rumbly. And here's the problem: there are so many possible causes. 1. Last night I had a sandwich made with deli meat which had a "best by" date of yesterday, so it was at the end of its rope. 2. I just started taking a new multivitamin this morning. 3. I'm in my mid-50s and things are unpredictable. 4.
