Just a reminder that open-source developers depend only on your donations. We have no other way to cover our costs. If you appreciate a project, take a moment to check how you can support it.

#Columnly is a UFO in the Fediverse. It has grown a lot in just a few days and many people are happy with it. I think #Fedilab still has its place thanks to its in-app features. But congrats to Dansup for building the app he wanted to use and sharing it with others.

Do you still use Twitter, even if you're not active?

I think it's time to move #Fedilab forward. I haven't introduced an ambitious feature in a long time. The idea is a shared Home timeline with all connected accounts, with the option to exclude some of them. Actions on a message won't need extra effort: the right account will be used, and if several accounts are involved, the app will ask you which one to use. It's a lot of work, so I'm asking you first.

I hope I will still be able to maintain #Fedilab for all Android devices, especially the oldest ones. That's why I chose not to use some libraries that would raise the minimum Android version, so the app still works on devices from 2014. To avoid encryption issues, Fedilab uses the Conscrypt library to install a modern security provider on devices that are no longer maintained. Not everyone runs the latest Android version or has a recent device, and I am proud to take care of these users.

Just a reminder that #Fedilab has a feature to detect the language of the message you are writing (disabled by default). If you are a polyglot, it can warn you when you have selected the wrong language. You can enable it in Settings > Compose > Check language when posting.

Concerning #HolosSocial, I still believe it's an interesting project because it brought something new to the #Fediverse. Not only because you run your #ActivityPub server on your device, but mainly because you can own your identity with your own domain name. My mistake was making it easy to run the server on your device, but not to get your own identity. That will be my challenge in the coming months. PS: I have no funding for this project and I work alone, so yes, it takes time :)

I'm slowly getting back to #HolosSocial and #CastLab. I've seen people say Holos is now closed source. That's not the case. It's still on the official #FDroid, built from source. My custom repo just runs alongside it for faster updates and betas. I've never released an app or server version without publishing the source code first, and I never will. Open source isn't a label. It's code you can read before you install an app or use a service.

RE: https://toot.fedilab.app/@apps/117339357102828311 In the end, we named her Stella. She has been with us for over three weeks now. She stayed calm and discreet, because adoption takes time, especially with older cats. She quickly accepted Haru, as they lived two years in the same shelter. We try to give her what she needs without disturbing her. Adopting an animal is a long journey before everyone gets used to each other. #FedilabCat: the tag for my cat posts, if you want to filter them.

Regarding the critical PHP vulnerability, only two projects were affected and have been shut down (I will update them tomorrow): #Fediplan and the MediaWiki. All other projects, such as #HolosSocial, #HolosDiscover, #Fedihood and #Pawfed, were not affected.

As you know, I love animals. That's why I built #Pawfed: https://pawfed.org/ It is fully built on #ActivityPub and lets people share messages with #OpenStreetMap to help our animal friends: https://pawfed.org/how-it-works I clearly cannot make it work on my own, and it hurts a bit to fail when everything is already done. If you want to join the project to promote it and validate messages, you are welcome. In the picture, Haru the black cat found his home after 2 years in a shelter.

You can ask us questions about #Fedilab here by mentioning this account. We can answer in English, German (Marco) or French (Tom), and we will do our best. However, we can't track issues here, so the best way is to open a ticket on #Codeberg: https://codeberg.org/tom79/Fedilab/issues

RE: https://toot.fedilab.app/@apps/117220471248326127 I would like to thank you all for respecting my choice to leave the Google Store. Seeing messages from people joining #FDroid to get the app and sharing their experience with a lot of good feedback made me very happy. What I read most often: F-Droid is easy to use, and the export/import feature works well with #Fedilab. For push notifications, I recommend using #SunUp https://f-droid.org/packages/org.unifiedpush.distributor.sunup

I am slowly coming back. I know #Fedilab has issues and still needs improvements, but this is endless work. That's why it is important for me to step back from issues and focus on a big new feature. I think working on the #Pixelfed API will give me that satisfaction.

I am working on the integration of the dedicated Pixelfed API. I started with DMs and groups. I am reworking the old chat conversation view, which is well suited for it. This work will benefit everyone. My goal is to cover all Pixelfed endpoints. #Fedilab will support 4 dedicated APIs: #Mastodon, #PeerTube, #Misskey and #Pixelfed.

#Mobilizon is now maintained and developed by the Kaihuri team. #Framasoft passed the project to this new team after completing its mission, and still runs the mobilizon.fr instance. Like Framasoft, #Kaihuri is a French non-profit and a member of the CHATONS collective. The goal stays the same: a free tool to organize events and groups without big platforms. You can follow the official account @mobilizon@framapiaf.org for announcements.

#Pixelfed has officially released API documentation for devs, and this is really good news! https://developers.pixelfed.org/api Many #Fedilab users also have a Pixelfed account. The work of the Pixelfed team on this documentation is greatly appreciated, and I was waiting for it. Updating Fedilab with it will be a priority, as the app has always supported Pixelfed with its own layout.

I took a break to have some distance. Coding was not a pleasure anymore, it was a duty. I had more and more the feeling that people were expecting things from me. Open source is not like I knew it. I feel we are each in our own corner. I have far fewer interactions with other devs than before. I see messages that are not honest for me. I stay silent, but it hurts me to not say the truth. (1/2)

When you come to a new open source project for the first time to report an issue, a "thank you for your work" or any kind words are very welcome. We give our free time to contribute. We have no salary and we represent no company. We are humans who want to offer the best for everyone. Yes, issues are mostly opened when something is wrong, but before writing one, remember the dev will read it and try to help you. We are not a company selling your data, and you did not pay for a service...

RE: https://framapiaf.org/@Framasoft/117435338068983534 A small French association lost 600 GB of data when Microsoft ended its "free" nonprofit offer. That's exactly why associations should not rely on GAFAM. I have supported #Framasoft for years. They can't offer as much storage, but with our help they can do more for everyone: https://soutenir.framasoft.org/en/

Google demands every developer's identity in the name of security. Yet more than 50 Play Store apps hiding malware were installed 2.3 million times¹. Meanwhile, #FDroid, which builds every app from source and rejects black boxes, is under threat. This is not about security, it is about control. That is why I don't want to support this joke. To those wondering about the future of #Fedilab: although I did everything I could to leave the Play Store, I still haven't received a reply to my GDPR request, sent weeks ago. The app has not been removed, so it still appears as an app that accepts Google's rules. That's not my goal. If the freedom to get apps is over, I want Fedilab to go with it. But Google keeps the app. Developers are being held hostage, be aware.

Three timeline functions in #Fedilab that some might not know: 1. Long-press on standard or list timelines for additional filters (for example, self-replies). (see image) 2. Long-press on a hashtag to follow or filter it. 3. Long-press on interaction buttons to interact using another account of yours (if you have only two, you will not be asked which account to use; quotes are not supported yet - see issue 121). Marco

I am at a stage with #HolosDiscover where I wonder if I should make it a separate project with its own server, or just clean up the DB from old messages. Of course, all messages are removed or updated as soon as the OP makes the action, but keeping such an amount of data impacts the infra I run alone for all my services. I have no way to track how it is used, so your feedback matters. What's your opinion?

#HolosDiscover now lets you filter trends (posts, tags and links) by language. It also displays trending accounts related to those results. What's your opinion about bringing HolosDiscover inside #Fedilab?

I decided to take a break, because coding became a competition with myself, releasing quickly to satisfy people using #Fedilab and my other projects. But that is the trap. I gave a lot, hoping people would keep enjoying my projects. I was looking at it the wrong way. People here are not waiting for results. Building fast and creating things before even suggesting them is not how it works. I should have understood it sooner :) Definitely taking that break. Tom

#Fedilab has left the Google Play Store. You can update your Google version manually using the APK files attached to the release notes. For automatic updates shortly after the release, I recommend switching to Fedilab's custom F-Droid repository. See how to do that in the next message of this thread. (1/2)

#Fedilab 3.45.1 fixes a crash with art timelines and Pixelfed timelines. If you use those, skip 3.45.0 when it releases on F-Droid. Furthermore, a bug with the new "show description on hidden media" feature was fixed.
