@carlana Ooh that's a truly pragmatic approach!

    OMG, I got a cute Applied Go gopher for Christmas! 🐹 Our "little" son made it for me. ("Little" is not quite accurate. He is 21 yo and the tallest in the house. The gopher, OTOH, is only one inch tall.) #golang

    Exposing SQL via API? A strange idea... Think twice. Some scenarios require more than just a simple CRUD API but are not complicated enough to require the full power of GraphQL. Why shouldn't the API clients be able to express their query needs in SQL? Well, security for one. SQL injections, anyone? But we don't need full SQL. The WHERE clause is sufficient. And of the WHERE clause, only the parts that the current query absolutely needs. Like: "weight between 10 an...

    AI is the end of programming language flame wars AI is getting better and better at generating code. Developer-facing aspects of a programming languages become increasingly unimportant. Fancy language constructs invented for “clever” coding will become obsolete. (“Clever coding” is mostly a euphemism for “writing incomprehensible code”, hence not much will be lost.) When AI generates code, the importance of language features shifts from human-facing towards machine-facing features. On the...

    @giuliohome I am not sure I understand. The quote is about the trivial cases that the proposed solution is NOT made for. Valentin argues that once the queries become more complicated, the HTTP/REST approach gets overly complex. This problem is independent of the chosen backend language.

    @giuliohome That's true, every language comes with specific paradigms and idioms. As Ludwig Wittgenstein said, "The limits of my language are the limits of my world." (Having lived in a pre-IT era, he referred to natural language, but I think this applies to programming languages as well.)

    @giuliohome Honestly, that was the reason I re-implemented the whole thing in Go. And it turned out that the Go code isn't any more complicated or difficult to comprehend than the Scala code.

    @texttheater If gofmt is still too relaxed for your taste, try gofumpt — https://pkg.go.dev/mvdan.cc/gofumpt Curious: Could you elaborate on the "putting newlines in pretty random places" part?

    @texttheater Looks like a bug. https://github.com/golang/go/issues/18677

    TIL: The Go compiler is fast but sometimes could be faster. (1) If the Go compiler is not as crazy fast as usual, check the underlying SCM for suspicious activity, such as an `hg stat` call. (At least if your SCM is Mercury. I don't know if Go calls Git in a similar way.) (2) 300ms compile time for a Go "script" is not fast enough for some people (or situations). (3) Yaegi (a Go interpreter and REPL) is faster than the standard Go compiler for "bringing firs...

    @beausimensen @dantleech DI in Go is sometimes as simple as creating an interface in the higher layer, a type implementing this interface in a lower layer, and some wiring in package main. https://appliedgo.net/di Some folks prefer Wire - https://pkg.go.dev/github.com/google/wire

    When Rob Pike talks about things done wrong in Go, it's not the usual random-dude-on-the-internet's language bashing. Rather, it's an invaluable list of lessons learned in designing a programming language and its ecosystem. Also in the latest Applied Go Weekly Newsletter issue: - Go does not have undefined variables. JSON has undefined values and null values. How to handle them in Go - Go 1.22 release notes, with editable and runnable code - The DDD Hamburger, an archit...
