2/4 We already know that (1+3) has to be multiplied by 2 - the coefficient - hence The Distributive Law (TDL). i.e. we MUST "distribute" the coefficient over whatever is inside the brackets, a(b+c)=(ab+ac). It's the reverse operation to factorising, so if we fail to obey TDL then we literally break factorised terms. We can also see that 8 has to be divided by the factorised term, hence our rules for Terms - Terms are separated by operators (+, -, x, /Γ·), and joined by brackets...

Thread index https://dotnet.social/@SmartmanApps/110897908266416158 Before I say what it is, I am NOT posting this as clickbait (which is how it's often used)! π I'm posting this as a Maths teacher who knows this topic inside-out and wants to help people to understand it better. There are MANY mistakes that people make and get the wrong answer, and I'm going to cover them in bite-size chunks each week for a few weeks So 8Γ·2(1+3)=? What is the answer (bonus: and WHY is it the answer...

1/6 I have a #MathsMonday #FactFriday cross-over event post for you this week π The #fact is that #Mathematics is universal. We may use different notation in different countries, but the underlying #Maths is the same everywhere. i.e. there is nothing "arbitrary" about #Math I saw someone question if there might be "different" Maths somewhere else in the universe. No. If I have 1 thing, and I get another thing, I now have 2 things. i.e. 1+1=2 (or your country's notatio...

What is your answer to 18Γ·3x2=? Boosts appreciated No, this isn't a trick question. An oft-cited blog has made the claim that "most humans" will get the wrong answer, which I think is a completely ridiculous claim, so I want hard data on the split. Unlike some other polls I've run, I want #teachers and #students to answer also, since you all come under "most humans" :-) #Mathematics #Maths #Math #arithmetic #OrderOfOperations #poll #education #school

6/7 Where we can clearly see Cajori using a:(bc) and a:bc as equivalent expressions, which is precisely because bc=(b X c) BY DEFINITION, as already discussed at https://dotnet.social/@SmartmanApps/110846452267056791. This was what Lennes failed to understand - he kept calling Products "Multiplication", even though it's IN BRACKETS, and thus done in the BRACKETS step, as he observed every textbook doing. He said it was an "exception to the rule", whereas in fact it's...

Wow. Admittedly I still teach this, but didn't think remembering how to do long division would be all that difficult. This has got me curious. Do you remember how to do long division? (no answers from current students/teachers please) #poll boosts appreciated. Try 100Γ·4 if you want to try it out and see if it comes back to you https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2026/may/07/kids-year-big-exams-anxieties-ai-long-division

1/x #MathsMonday #Maths #Math Over time I've saved many screenshots of #AI #slop #aiSlop stuffing up #Mathematics big time, and on occasion I've had cause to reshare them, and at times I have cursed that I can only attach 4 pics per post. Then I realised, what am I worried about - just post them all in a thread and then I can just link to the thread (or individual screenshots), and can add to it as more come up π P.S. feel free to reply with more I hereby present to you, AI&...
