@feditips@mstdn.social What if the URL to my link is 10TB in size?

@jakeRaccoon@mastodon.social 2022-11-24 21:17
@feditips@mstdn.social So only the first 23 characters are shown and rest are hidden? But surely there must be some limit on the length of the actual URL? Otherwise it would be a major vulnerability. Feeling kinda inclined to test this..

@mokrates@chaos.social 2022-11-24 21:31
@feditips@mstdn.social So a shortener is still useful if you get the length to under 23?

@massivebox@blob.cat 2022-11-24 22:40
@feditips@mstdn.social Are you sure about the last part? I get links without protocol like massivebox.net as clickable on the Mastodon web client, Pleroma web client and Husky.

@feditips@mstdn.social Link shorteners are used almost exclusively for tracking nowadays, so people who use them will continue using them.

@feditips@mstdn.social Drop the S. Just http://. It’s simpler.

@feditips@mstdn.social I think all social networks do this nowadays…minus the HTTPS required part.

@feditips@mstdn.social how does a URL read out to a screen reader? I'm wondering if it's worth using short URLs to make it easier to navigate posts for accessibility

@nicd@fosstodon.org 2022-11-25 09:13
@feditips@mstdn.social This is very handy for my pastebin that stores content in the URL: https://nicd.gitlab.io/t/#v-YVVW8E73Yf~=Skrbd$iNqbie4mo.vXDuD0Oxi+RbNjP6tOmxfr_zBjX$WOwHne94=2ibmMtg.2$x?_+Z-DYaX+_1lfBUYSqoZ585yU?NECkjPB14RBdBMxan8s+&47/rZdFj&Et0MKem20Hr6N=KkWyrSVpH.+E4-d+ZadYt3Tcb-b&.Pra0VLOfkNrFhU5knxi7ag$wJ4Hk7.hHDvsVLfZN.2ZfuDI_eZ4YC/a-s6jbPpL~L5wblJWKFbi+ueQ_hxksziAu621hmuoq+_4hPRRgITQLYWDIHXh4K6lSVmPF2$k&JBYBm&kLuno$+m6=fW$Nxy=i+5Qyir1sSqZ+-CrP1IkPykl8_Z8SI1~uNNr4PZN+A85-06$=nyDQFq9pxwfqB9~QTY4&?czudIXuOBvs4f_m$Oir21Z8bhjUwjC8LjN0aMfEMPun0~p++d0pTP9UYBSu_MOHJkaN.gRv&jnJnu-&mK5qb_sf/RAI0vYiw6VAqFGH.2050/A1lkYbSkFqNz.P-&Q= :D

@douglerner@mastodon.world 2022-11-25 09:38
@feditips@mstdn.social it would be nice if links automatically embedded some part of what was being linked, like a newspaper, headline or image. Like they do at Facebook and Twitter.

@feditips@mstdn.social I don’t click on shortened links (bitly etc). • They’re #MysteryMeat links that hide the true destination. I want to know where I’m going. (Ideally I’d even like a preview.) • Into what should be a simple hyperlink they add a redirect point that itself is targeted. • Moar tracking. • The redirect can go away at any time. There’s no guarantee these services will always be there.
