“I can’t afford to pay an artist!” Well, I can’t afford a car, but that doesn’t mean I get to let a robot steal enough car parts from other people to frankenstein me one. Use stock images, learn yourself, or go without.

@astronomerritt@hachyderm.io I have mostly gone for the last option, my page is basically just text. It's probably not optimal for gathering readers, but it's not really what I'm after anyway, it's also nice in that my whole page is tiny, the whole blog coming down to under 3 mb for the complete thing, loads quickly on all connections and so on. I agree with you though, if I see a picture that is obviously generated I really do not feel like reading the text, since I'm having the feeling in the back of my mind that I'm just reading something an LLM spewed out.

  • @astronomerritt@hachyderm.io this is true. Pls note: the argument is also true about pretty much everything we use and own: anything you use where someone in the production chain (earth itself and her nonhuman inhabitants included) that is not treated as you would want to be treated or paid the wage you are willing to work for, we have effectively stolen. That we use the hidden threat of military violence and other methods to coerce ppl to cooperate changes nothing to the equation. So we should perhaps take a hard look at our lives and see what (probably few) items we buy and what we steal. And act accordingly.

@astronomerritt@hachyderm.io This is why I like using Ghost, with its built-in Unsplash integration for use in header/featured images for blog posts. Either that or I'll use one of my own images, which is usually game-related or a screenshot. But professional authors using it? For book covers no less? Eurgh.

  • @astronomerritt@hachyderm.io Similar to "I cannot afford to hire a translator" (which often actually means: it's cheaper to just let AI do it, and I don't care if it's unethical and/or imprecise).

@astronomerritt@hachyderm.io Yup. My logo is my own brilliance (for the Aunt James Academy, a chimerical institution). I suspect we're getting to the place where originality is valued.

@astronomerritt@hachyderm.io I hate to defend this, but wouldn't piracy be the closer analogy, not theft? If we could park in front of a dealership and make a copy of a car without damaging it, lots of people would gladly do so.

@astronomerritt@hachyderm.io And yet readers demand cover art, and don't greatly care that the cover will cost the author more than a year's royalties for the book

@astronomerritt@hachyderm.io I read that as "I can't afford a cat" at a first. Was wondering what kind of person would be making a cat out of car parts.

@astronomerritt@hachyderm.io Or even ask the artist if you can use something already made. But give credit. Feature them show a modicum of gratitude for the work and help the artist as you are helped by the artist. It may or may not work, but more often than not, artists will let you use the work for some things with visible credit.

  • @astronomerritt@hachyderm.io Now, that's actually a great idea. Let's build a robot that goes around stealing car parts from SUVs and Teslas. But it uses the parts to make more robots.

@astronomerritt@hachyderm.io I go without. I want to pay a real artist for real work. Stock images wouldn't work for my stuff, and my artistic skills depress me. If I ever get to the point where I want to package my writing for sale - rather than for tips - I'll find a way to hire an artist.

@astronomerritt@hachyderm.io I remember an argument I had with a friend about minimum wage increases she complained would affect hubby’s biz. I said if he can’t afford to pay a living wage, you don’t hire them. maybe you’ll have to hustle harder like the rest of us. What are you doing for them that they should suffer for you? I’d be far more successful with help. It’s not in my budget. They want people to invest in them, but it’s never reciprocated. It’s capitalist exploitation.

@astronomerritt@hachyderm.io I would pay good money for a (working) Frankenstein car, but not for Frankenstein art.

@astronomerritt@hachyderm.io "I can't afford to pay an artist" is one of my favourite arguments because neither can I and I AM an artist XD. There's *always* a way to make art that doesn't involve the billionaire's plagiarism machine. Always.
