Went back to messing with the laptop and decided I didn't like Mint very much so made two more USB sticks to test Elementary OS and Kubuntu. Elementary is remarkably Mac-like at first glance. Like.. a lot. It even had what I'd say is the correct default settings for the trackpad, too. But I could not find a setting to fix the display scale thing - same problem Mint had. Then I tried Kubuntu and immediately found a way to do fractional scaling and it looked quite nice and was immediately sold.

@bigzaphod@mastodon.social if it helps I've never had good experiences with Linux Mint. Not sure why it's so highly recommended.

@bigzaphod@mastodon.social I can't help with most of that, but in Linux Mint if you go into the settings there is a checkbox to enable fractional scaling. It says “experimental” but it works fine. My Mint laptop is at 125%.
