@afewbugs@social.coop My local Waitrose is currently closed for a refurbishment. I wonder if that will include beefier fridges, freezers and chiller cabinets for the new normal of the British summer. All the supermarkets will have to gradually replace their refrigeration - customer facing and behind the scenes - over the next decade or so, for ones that can cope with this heat. And we know who will pay for it.

@afewbugs@social.coop as someone who worked as a Merchandiser in Tesco many years ago, I do not envy the Merchandiser who had to discount every single item

@afewbugs@social.coop this has happened in every single heatwave at my local big tesco, the fridges really can't cope

@afewbugs@social.coop that's a very pre-prepared looking sign

@afewbugs@social.coop at least these are those freezers with doors. Just was on holidays in Scotland and we froze in the supermarket because all the fridges didn't have doors and just cooled the whole supermarket. Seems in Germany they changed that a couple of years ago.

@steely_glint@chaos.social @afewbugs@social.coop Yeah the Tesco Express near me is all closed cabinets now. People keep leaving them open of course. 🫤 They only have one staffed till now, which is the one you have to use if you want to buy cigarettes or vapes, though you can take any purchases there. But otherwise it's all self-checkouts. They usually claim they're not laying anyone off when they take out staffed tills, but I bet what they do instead is just not replace people who leave over next couple of years
