@wolfie@deadinsi.de @afewbugs@social.coop An employee at Sainsburys told us that it's because now all the fridges and freezers are linked to the whole store aircon system. I don't know how true that is, but when I worked for Iceland, 30 plus years ago, all the fridges and freezers were independent units, and a breakdown was rare, whereas nowadays there always seem to be units in most supermarkets that are over iced, or not working.
