I get the humour but I’m uncomfortable. 2 wrongs don’t make a right and all that

Isn’t the bottom right one from The VVitch (2015)? That looks kinda like Anya Taylor-Joy. Correct me if I’m wrong. I haven’t seen Pearl (2022), so I’m not able to verify if that’s actually a scene from it.

I just got done watching Jessie Gender’s video about Obsession: youtu.be/Ta51v9tW3CA Part of the video talks about the trope that women in horror movies become the monsters the patriarchy is afraid of. Sort of along the line of “If they get the chance they will treat us like we treated them.” which apparently is a legit reason for some types of men to be actually afraid of feminism. So I am torn. On one hand scenes like these are cathartic and I will never fault a sister for getting revenge on her tormenters. On the other hand this is a patriarchial trope and almost a dog-whistle against feminism. (I probably didn’t express what I want to say here perfectly clearly, very open for input!)

Top left is Carrie Top right is the Love Witch - a feminist horror movie that pretends it is from the 60s. It is very convincing in that endeavor. I personally didn’t like the movie, but have endless respect for the vision and how it was crrated. The director, Anna Biller, recently made a new movie called The Face of Horror, that also pretends to be from around the 60s and/or 70s and it looks really beautiful. Haven’t seen it, though. Bottom left is Jennifer’s Body Bottom right is The VVitch - not Pearl. The VVitch is a period piece about fanatical religion in settler times and how a coven of actual witches starts messing with one fanily that has been cast out of the larger community and must life close to a dark, fucked up forest. Pearl is about a woman who is stuck on her parents’ farm and wants to be a movie star while also displaying signs of sadism and delusions of grandure. The difference between Pearl and The VVitch is that we feel sorry for the girl in the VVitch who gets blamed for pretty much every bad thing that happens to the family as she is slowly blossoming into a woman and doesn’t know who to turn to for support and guidance. Pearl is about a disturbed girl who snaps under the pressure of being stuck in a life she doesn’t want and that the dream that has kept her alive all these years, will never go anywhere. Not so much a “good for her” type of story. More like a “feels bad, man” type of story. Here’s a couple of other “good for her” types of horror movies: American Mary - very fun watch Midsommar - artsy Ready Or Not - goofy, but fun I Spit On Your Grave - not a fun watch
