Ooh that sounds like a good video. And yeah I get the concerns with it being used as antifeminist propaganda, but at the same time fucking hell I need some catharsis sometimes. But also, I think a lot of these stories are ones of women being pushed over the edge, which is something our culture doesn’t fear enough. Horror is the better medium for it, because something like if a feminist were to make something inspired by Kill Bill for example, it would be too easy to put into the general “killing bad people” fantasy.

I think, that with Obession specifically “the female monster” trope is turned on its head because Nikki’s behavior post wish is a reflection of the deeply disturbed obsession Bear has of her. That’s why there is such an emphasis on her not being her throughout the movie. She isn’t her, she is Bear’s obsession with her, reflected back at him. Nothing of what happens has anything to do with Nikki, it is all Bear and he cannot accept the responsibility of his own inner darkness so the world around him has to suffer. To me, it also became a rather personal watch because it felt like a literal interpretation of what it is like being stuck in a relarionship with a controlling narcissist. When I was in a relationship like that, I felt like the real me got pushed all the way back inside to a place where he couldn’t reach me and the rest of me became his puppet. I said and did things I would never say and do and i found it hard to think my own thoughts and be my own self while I was with him. And in the end he got bored of me because I stopped being me. The thing is that he never wanted the real me. He wanted a relfection of himself and when you’re an inexperienced and insecure teenager in your first relationship with a routined abuser, you kinda just fall into whatever role he forces upon you because you are afraid of what happens if you don’t. Both in terms of violence, but especially in terms of abandonment. When I was in the deepest, I would have rather let him hit me than abandon me. I think he knew that, so he abandoned me routinely and threatened to break up all the time. Watching Obsession was like getting a hardcore flashback to that time in my life where I wasnt me, tried to become his dream girl and I felt trapped in my own body while being both afraid of and dependent on him. It is so sick. Obsession portrayed it so well, even if it took everything to the extreme, lol.
