The Goois Natuurreservaat keeps 2900 hectares open across 65 separate areas, a landscape of deliberately maintained poverty. Part of that work is done by walking a flock of Drenthe heath sheep onto a field and standing there while it eats. The flock crops back invading grass and carries heather seed in its wool. Without it, the forest quietly closes the gaps.
