For those that keep saying wind turbines can't be reused or recycled need to read this "The analysis found a total 99.9% material recovery – calculating that 79.5% of the wind farm’s components were recycled and 20.4% were reused or retained as spare parts, keeping nearly all material out of landfills." 100% of the recycling and component retention took place in the UK, supporting domestic green jobs and at least 10 supply chain companies. https://www.newcivilengineer.com/latest/uk-first-sees-decommissioning-of-scottishpower-wind-farm-demonstrate-turbine-circularity-01-09-2026/ #renewables #greenenergy

@ar387@mstdn.social The more important question is how many years did that wind farm run before needing to be decommissioned. When we compare various energy systems this is an important consideration.

@ar387@mstdn.social It's almost as if the people who said it was impossible to recycle wind turbines were lying.

@ar387@mstdn.social I was particularly interested in how they were recycling the old turbine blades. Here in the US we've seen so many reports of the blades just ending up in landfills because the composites are so difficult to handle. Looks like Plaswire has an innovative approach that should stand as an example to others.

@ar387@mstdn.social Interesting. I was informed by an associate in the field, that more goes into reprocessing the blades, than the actual benefit over competing clean energy metrics. Then again, how many of the principals are supplying accurate data, and to whom?

@ar387@mstdn.social a canal restoration project in England just installed Lock Gates made from up-cycled end-of-life Dutch wind turbine blade(s).

@ar387@mstdn.social this is great news :) I can't help chuckling at "turbine circularity" - like, that's obvious if you watch them for 5 minutes

@ar387@mstdn.social It makes you wonder who has been spreading lies. I'd note, for comparison, that neither gas nor coal can be recycled, though I believe wood ash is a useful waste product.

@ar387@mstdn.social if the energy choice is between wind or fossil fuel, I'd rather be left with a mountain of old turbine blades instead of gigatons of carbon dioxide diffused across the atmosphere and roasting the planet alive
