FreeBSD 15 + CDE is probably the closest you can get to sitting in front of a high-end UNIX workstation without owning a time machine. Running Common Desktop Environment in 2026 feels strangely refreshing. No blur effects, no Electron, no notifications fighting for attention, No ai written code, just Motif, terminals, man pages, and a desktop paradigm that was already mature before I was born. Current setup: • FreeBSD 15.0-RELEASE • CDE • dtwm • bhyve • Motif everywhere Today’s activity: reading bhyve(4) manuals and pretending I'm a UNIX admin in 1996. #FreeBSD #BSD #CDE #Unix #Motif #bhyve #OpenSource #UnixPorn #RetroComputing #FOSS

@sohrab@mastodon.bsd.cafe I remember using (and writing programs for) it on various UNIX workstations back in the 90s, but it never felt a patch on earlier, pre X11 window managers that (for example) Apollo and Sun had in the mid to late 1980s. I never grew to love CDE, but it did have the advantage of being very standard across multiple hardware platforms and vendors, making support far easier.

@sohrab@mastodon.bsd.cafe I had been a Unix administrator for years by 1996. I'm gonna have to do some downloading and play a little! 😁

@sohrab@mastodon.bsd.cafe That actually takes me bak to 1992 when at uni and I got into IBM's OS/2 .. the only student not using windows.. Also around that time a friend and I got hold of Linux 0.012 I think it was, before the 0.9 beta.. got it working with SLIP, KB and some other drivers.. good times ;-))

@sohrab@mastodon.bsd.cafe the desktop was nice! And that’s one of the best color schemes, too. But when I worked in the mid-90s on a Sun workstation (Sparcstation LX, then a 5), we always lamented that we didn’t have many real applications. We had FrameMaker, StarOffice (eventually), and Netscape. Finally Gimp arrived and we could work with images. The hardware and the desktops were nice, but at work most had to have a laptop or second desktop to do “productivity” stuff in a corporate environment by the 90s.

@technothrasher@universeodon.com @psychotimmy@oldbytes.space @fedops@fosstodon.org @sohrab@mastodon.bsd.cafe Back in the days I resented how all of those desktop environments wasted my precious and limited screen space, so although I had a SGI Indy I never used the SGI desktop, I ran tvtwm¹. ¹ https://utcc.utoronto.ca/~cks/space/blog/sysadmin/MyDesktopTour has a 1996 screenshot at the bottom. In 1996 this 1280x1024 was probably on a 19" CRT, maybe even a 17" one (I forget what was the standard size for SGI Indys).
