This is your periodic reminder that ambulatory wheelchair users exist. Many folks think wheelchairs are only for those who can't walk at all, or folks who can only take a couple steps. Wheelchairs and electric scooters are used due to pain, weakness, balance issues, orthostatic intolerance, etc. #Disability #Wheelchairs #DynamicDisability #ChronicIllness #MEcfs

@ahimsa_pdx@disabled.social There are also those of us who need aids such as canes, walkers, crutches and wheelchairs PART of the time, such as the infamous "Bad Day". Sometimes, we have to use them for events to have a good time and not have to worry about straining ourselves to the point where we'll have a whole slew of bad days as a result too.

@ahimsa_pdx@disabled.social lately heard staff in a swimming pool giving out that they helped a man in a wheelchair and then saw him walk into his car ... As if he had tricked them into / pretended he needed the chair. Made me so cross they were so rude and ignorant about disability.

@ahimsa_pdx@disabled.social Thanks for informing me! I didn't know of the terminology, so for anyone else confused about it, ambulatory refers to "walking": https://www.verywellhealth.com/what-is-ambulatory-2615114

  • @ahimsa_pdx@disabled.social yes! And some diseases periodically flare and take away the ability to walk. Disabilities aren't linear.

@ahimsa_pdx@disabled.social I…never knew this was the word for how to describe my state. Don’t need a wheelchair 95% of the time. But if I have to stand for more than 20 minutes without walking, or walk for more than 45 minutes without sitting for a spell, I start needing my wheelchair due to my stamina running out completely.

@ahimsa_pdx@disabled.social I'd also like to use this moment as a reminder that people who use handicapped parking spots don't always use wheelchairs, etc. I've run into this problem, people leaving nasty notes on cars or making comments at disabled individuals who they perceive as able bodied just because they're using their legs.

@ahimsa_pdx@disabled.social I have been an asshole due to this ignorance specifically. I can't fix it for that random stranger, but I can emphasize that disability, mobility, and access needs vary more than you can imagine.

@ahimsa_pdx@disabled.social we do exist but some of us do not go far or only use 2 canes very often and have chairs all over the place to be ready after that minute used to feel normal ...

@ahimsa_pdx@disabled.social I know one here in Ottawa. Often see her at concerts in the summer. She can walk short distances if not tired so sometimes she uses a chair. Not a big deal. #Ottawa

@ahimsa_pdx@disabled.social Yes, yes! As a culpable victim of severe emphysema — on O₂ 24/7 — I can walk maybe 20 meters with a walker and oxygen before needing a lengthy sit-down. Without my wheelchair, I'd rarely leave my room.

@ahimsa_pdx@disabled.social There was a nice scene in the latest Knives Out installment in which a wheelchair user got up and stood briefly and had a sharp response when people looked at her funny.

@ahimsa_pdx@disabled.social It's like every disability. It's a spectrum, not a state. So annoying. My wife can stand for small periods of time. People get all frustrated, so now, every time she does stand, I yell: "it's a miracle!" I dont! My wife would kill me! But people! Come on!!!
