My dad has a katana in the park utility truck, best guess till I talk to him is someone moved out and left it behind. Some oddities. The way the blade is rusted it's probably carbon steel, but, it has no sharp edge. The bevel terminates in a very thin, but also very flat, side. Usually for modern swords, if you were going to do that you'd make the thing out of stainless steel. Which can rust in the right conditions, but it's an oddity. I can't tell if the handle is plated or solid, but it's bronze. Lots of green oxidation but also some areas where the coppery bronze is showing through- interestingly, right in a few spaces you'd expect hands to be when holding it. No clue about the tang. Going to ask if I could have it to look into it. Is it collectible? Is the blade a steel worth sharpening? Does it have a decent tang? It's not remotely a traditional katana, no jamon that I can see, no pins in the handle for disassembly. Katana like object might be a better description for purists. My hope is for a decent tang and steel, in that case I'll clean it up and look into sharpening. Second best is it's crap as an actual sword, at that point it's being cleaned and hung on a wall. It should look quite nice when polished up. It's unlikely it's collectible enough to be worth the effort of selling when I don't currently own any sort of katana, but I'll at least briefly look at that possibility. The absolute best case would probably be a WWII era blade that was put into a decorative handle. That would be cool, and not unheard of. I'd be shocked if any part of it is older than that. No makers mark or country of origin marks that i can see, but signatures sometimes get worked into artistic embellishments or could be hiding under rust.
