@bstacey@icosahedron.website I can almost see it as a reaction--that is to say, it's plausible that bashing into Akemi Homura and the other magical girls might send young Madoka flying in the direction indicated by her mother, i.e. she decides to become ruthlessly practical and devoted to conventional success, disdaining magic and refusing to acknowledge its existence right under her nose. Seems like good material for a tragedy!

However, for Madoka to convert to Yudkowskyanism, she'd have to recoil not just into "career woman" or "hard-nosed scientist" but rather "IQ fetishist who fundamentally regards most humans as 'NPCs'". The character in the original who sounds the most like a Yudkowsky hero is... Kyubey.
