I did vote so this isn’t my personal opinion. I’ve been told many times it’s “voting for the lesser of two evils, they’re both evil and I don’t agree with either.” There’s no real sense of choice. I can see it. It very much feels like that South Park episode where they have to vote for the school mascot. Do you want it to be a Giant Douche or, a Turd Sandwich? And then at the end it was all for nothing because they don’t change their mascot so it was all pointless.

Because the Democrats also have a terrible climate policy?
-
@nul42@lemmy.ca 2026-10-18 13:27
Neither party campaign’s on climate policy so the problem is the party, not the voter.

a lot of this has to do with the media. when the fourth estate is owned by the chief architects of the problem, people don’t think about it. there are so many issues that i find incredibly important, but most people never consider because our media is so much propaganda and cover for the parasite class. also, trump antics are much more interesting to the average usian on either side than climate science. add to this the sad state of science literacy. we’re a mess.

We might get some of them out to vote if there were someone on the ballot with progressive climate views they were willing to vote for. I’m not saying it’s 100% guaranteed to work, but we could try it, just once maybe, and see what happens.

@Objection@lemmy.ml 2026-10-18 13:53
Uno reverse card If so many people who care about the climate don’t vote, then why don’t the Democrats take a stronger line on the issue to appeal to them?

@cogitase@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2026-10-18 14:14
You won’t be seeing much in the way of “climate change” messaging this time around because it’s been rolled into “reducing energy costs” messaging. Since LCOEs for solar and wind have fallen below natural gas plants, which were previously the cheapest if you ignored the SCC, politicians have decided to rebrand. Campaigning on cutting energy costs polls much better when the economy is in poor shape so this is more effective. It’s also worth noting that the last time that Democrats controlled the legislature and the executive they took substantial action; en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inflation_Reduction_Act#Ene…

Listen, existential threats are important and all, but there’s a trans kid who wants to play soccer, and I vaguely remember something about a tan suit, so… I think I’ll just sit this one out - surely my countrymen can be trusted to make the right decision! Gotta have standards, ya know?
-
@Manjushri@piefed.social 2026-10-18 15:04
Check any political thread here or elsewhere and you will hear a regular refrain of “both parties are the same” and “voting doesn’t matter because it’s all rigged!” A huge percentage of Americans have fallen for that line of bullshit and now don’t bother to vote at all no matter what they think is important. It’s a sad fact that propaganda works.

Well you see, not voting is actually pretty based and communist, and will help towards a revolution that will happen Soon. It really shows politicians what’s what.

I think a more interesting question would be, regardless of someone’s priorities, why they don’t vote.

if clearly motivated people don’t want to vote for you, it’s not an indication that they should lower their standards, it’s an indication that you should have standards to begin with it’s cute how liberals here are so resilient to reality. people don’t care for slow, steady, painfully incremental progress (if even that) when every summer is so much hotter than the last one.
-
@Horsey@lemmy.world 2026-10-18 17:04
That’s not a lot of voters, and those voters aren’t evenly distributed amongst the country.

Probably because both party do not care about climate, they should still at least vote for the green

@kreskin@lemmy.world 2026-10-18 17:45
Both candidates were pro war. Any true environmentalist knows war is the top polluting activity humans do. People didnt vote last time because we had absolutely miserable candidate choices and an undemocratic primary. \

Americans act on convenience. Nothing more. Most Americans talk shit but won’t follow up with action. Also they won’t protest if it comes at a sacrifice to this convenience. They’ll showy from the rooftops about how Meta sucks ass. But will not deactivate their accounts. They’ll whine and cry about the administration but will not vote against it if they don’t like the person running against it. They’ll protest in the streets knowing it’ll do nothing, to move the needle, but refuse to do something so simple as not pay their taxes which absolutly WILL move the needle) Americans won’t sacrifice. They’ll say a lot of shit, but they aren’t worth the worts they say.

I see everyone going to blaming parties or whatever but its like no one considers that they are just complacent. If people wanted they could fundamentally change the way they live their lives to make things better for everyone else and remarkably more difficult for themselves. Why they dont is self evident.

The amount of “bOtH SiDeZ” propaganda bullshit I’m seeing it the comments here leaves me no doubt that the world is cooked. I mean, these idiots couldn’t get fucked enough to stand in the way of a fascist, because their entitlement didn’t allow little purity test to even think that there was a difference. Now we have full blown fascism, but at least the grnocide continued unabated!

@WraithGear@lemmy.world 2026-10-18 22:57
because climate concerns are not a concern with either party? both sides may not be the same, but they hold the same views on 90% of all things. and more and more that last 10% seems to be things they want but are still ashamed about it.

As we all know, if you just keep telling people to vote, eventually they’ll just be like “Yeah! I’m gonna take off work from the job that doesn’t give me time off, go find a polling place, which isn’t close and crowded because the state doesn’t run enough polling places, then try to go there in a town without public transportation! Why didn’t I think of this sooner?” Then they get there and find out that most of the local elections are uncontested and the federal ones have only a choice between no climate policy and climate policy which is insufficient but delays the necessary work until it’s too late. Then after begrudgingly voting, they realize that their districts are so gerrymandered their vote basically didn’t count anyway. Nope, no need to change anything, we just need to keep telling people to go vote. It hasn’t worked yet, but… uh…

I think things like voter suppression, access to information also weigh a lot heavier than some might think. I’m also kind of wondering how they came up with this number of 11 million, if people are not politically motivated and activated but are still politically conscious enough to have priorities, there are systemic issues keeping them from voting. And especially at these large numbers, simply saying ‘well they should vote’ and being angry about them supposedly not voting won’t change a damn thing. We don’t need to yell at people. We need to fucking strategize.

Because no current system has offered a viable path. Sustainability, which includes climate and all the other factors, will require everyone to live with less to ensure everyone has enough of what matters. Our politics, our economics our sociology consider asking the rights questions as radical, precicely because it threatens the wealth, power and prestige of those who have it. The elite would rather the poor who can’t cope, die in order to bring consumption to sustainable levels. Case in point, Bill Gates will write a book on what other people should do about climate change, yet live the hipocrisy of owning a small private fleet of jets and helicopters amd a leasing company for his slightly less elite customers. Ecological economics calls this malinvestment. Not misallocation (suboptimal) but malallocation (actively hurts our goals) The resources of those jets could have built passivehouses, sustainable farms, sufficiency across countless domains. His communications could have been virtual. I think he is smart enough to know how to use Teams. But hypocrisy is not a mistake for these people. The democratic choices of bad and worse don’t reflect viable paths. Worse will build autocracy that means profligacy for the ingroup, then doom for the vile and faster doom for everyone else. Cutting the outgroups down as the definition of sustainable shrinks and then cutting potential in group rivals. The bad choice is to do the same thing, but instead of an in group and outgroups, we’ll have an in, an out and a middle class. The 2/3 will make the same decisions, but trim with a few select sacrifices across the three groups as the pie shrinks. Bad and worse is not a viable choice. Even the greens where they exist, haven’t communicated a viable return to sustainable for all. They only hint at a portion of the changes required.

I am only commenting because 11.2 is the upper limit of an age range from Lolita and is the number that pedophiles use as a call sign in quite a number of ways, and now you will see it in unfortunate ways, too.

If so many Americans cared about democracy and their way of life, THEN WHY THE FUCK DID THEY VOTE FOR THE ORANGE FACED CRIMINAL? Fucking lemmings… that’s why. They’ve been programmed. And the programs are still running. It may be too late.
