American Epic: The Best of Mississippi John Hurt (Third Man TMR-459, 2017)
Revelatory new transfers and restoration of Hurt’s original 1928 sessions. They almost sound as good as the Vanguard stuff that was recorded in the 60s. (Comparing the two it’s wild how little his voice and guitar changed in almost 40 years!) This was done for the soundtrack of a documentary I have not seen. Maybe I should.

The Mississippi Sheiks: Volume 1 (Third Man TMR156, 2013) Jack White’s label teamed up with Document Records to reissue the complete works of Charley Patton, Blind Willie McTell and these guys I’d never heard before. I knew the song “Sitting on Top of the World” but didn’t know who wrote it. Too much skronky fiddle for me but it’s always fun to dig into a scene you didn’t know existed.
