The Best of Mississippi John Hurt (Vanguard VSD 19/20, 1971)
Recorded in concert at Oberlin College in 1965. When I first heard Hurt, I felt like a secret room had been unlocked, containing everything I love about the guitar from Scotty Moore to Johnny Marr to Elliott Smith. His Vanguard recordings are well-recorded and intimate and his voice is sweet and comforting and his guitar technique is bonkers.

American Epic: The Best of Mississippi John Hurt (Third Man TMR-459, 2017) Revelatory new transfers and restoration of Hurt’s original 1928 sessions. They almost sound as good as the Vanguard stuff that was recorded in the 60s. (Comparing the two it’s wild how little his voice and guitar changed in almost 40 years!)
